A1: Like most Americans, I'm only fluent in English. As a writer I "collect" vocab when I travel: i.e., Irish slang ("banjaxed,") UK English ("rocket" v. "arugula") & US regionalisms ("pop v. soda"), also funny translations If you love language, listen @lingopod. #CultureTrav

A1. I speak English and French. I want to learn Thai, Spanish and Italian! #CultureTrav

A2: As an American living in Trondheim at age 10, I simply had to listen and learn. No 1 in my Norwegian school translated much. I also spent a lot of time w the kids in my neighborhood, and gradually became able to converse in language, not signs. #CultureTrav

A1 Hola all! I’m Heidi. I speak Spanish and a bit of Portuguese. I’d like to learn Mandarian. Maybe a #travelgoal for 2019 #culturetrav

A2: So many times. Hm, one time, lots of hand gestures and piecing together of the minimal words I knew when living in Korea and Japan. Oh, and beer. Beer fixes all language barriers, I think. #CultureTrav

A2. When I was in #China my hostel would write notes for me to give to cabdrivers so I could tell them where I was going #CultureTrav

A2 Yes, all the time! Especially in Poland when I was traveling through a more remote part of the country. Lots of charades and some Google Translate helped. #culturetrav
