A3: Travelers who bother to learn and speak a few words in every country they visit signal they are interested in the culture. Pronouncing & learning foreign words (no matter how difficult) tunes your ear & educates your mouth so you listen & practice. #CultureTrav #language

A2: I always learn basic pleasantries, common questions and how to order foods I like when I travel. I write it all down (both in the language I’m learning and phonetically) in the notebook I take with me, so if I get stuck, I can read or just point! #culturetrav

replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A3) I think that different languages can bind us together via song and dance like when I went to a Tango show in Buenos Aires. #CultureTrav

replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A2 Yes, travelling to many countries where English is not the first language used, I've been able to communicate using a few well learned phrases, and a willingness to attempt to connect. A smile goes along way towards people wanting to help. #CultureTrav

A5: I love idiomatic phrases. They are descriptive and original, often humorous. My favorite is French, "dans les choux," literally, "in the cabbages." We Americans would say, "up a creek." I blogged about it here: https://t.co/ScxSwYAy0Q #CultureTrav

replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O Did a LOT of that while in Russia. The entire alphabet is different, so learning the language was twice as difficult. Thank goodness for restaurants with picture menus. #CultureTrav
