Q2: Have you ever had to overcome a language barrier? How did you deal with it? #CultureTrav
A2: As an American living in Trondheim at age 10, I simply had to listen and learn. No 1 in my Norwegian school translated much. I also spent a lot of time w the kids in my neighborhood, and gradually became able to converse in language, not signs. #CultureTrav
A2: Nothing too scary yet, been very thankful that most people have been able to understand me! #CultureTrav
A2: Yes! When it comes to language barriers, I find that making any attempt to speak is appreciated, even if you have minimal knowledge of the language. Try to say something. When listening to a non-native speaker of your language, be patient, smile and listen. #CultureTrav

A2 I once knocked on someone's door in rural Germany but she did not speak English (nor I German). She took me to someone who did. That is one way. #travel #CultureTrav
A2: We think everyone has at one point or another. As long as you try not to get too frustrated and try your best, you will be able to communicate in one way or another :) #culturetrav

A2: So many times. Hm, one time, lots of hand gestures and piecing together of the minimal words I knew when living in Korea and Japan. Oh, and beer. Beer fixes all language barriers, I think. #CultureTrav

A2: Dating a French guy when I knew little of the language and he barely knew any English. We tried with thr help of apps, but it wasn't easy to communicate beyond basic stuff. I'm better off without him though, for non-linguistic reasons. 😉 #CultureTrav https://t.co/FN3JmM3AUu
replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A2) I have thanks to a translator app I downloaded prior to my recent trip. #CultureTrav
A2. When I was in #China my hostel would write notes for me to give to cabdrivers so I could tell them where I was going #CultureTrav
replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A2. Yup, in Istanbul, some of the market guys couldn’t speak English and I can’t speak Turkish. I had to use the power of pointing and the odd charades. Luckily they also had a sense of humour! 🤣 (and I got what I wanted!). #CultureTrav

A2 Yes, all the time! Especially in Poland when I was traveling through a more remote part of the country. Lots of charades and some Google Translate helped. #culturetrav
A2 Almost on every trip and even sometimes at home. Although Romance languages are easy for me, I have little to no knowledge of Arabic or any Asian language. I think my most challenging #adventure would be to travel to #japan in 19 for the #kumanokodo #culturetrav
#culturetrav A2: the language issue is one of my major issues when i travel, because I'm unassertive, scared of being laughed at, insecure, and have a brain that doesn't think quickly enough to be any good at them.

A2: I always learn basic pleasantries, common questions and how to order foods I like when I travel. I write it all down (both in the language I’m learning and phonetically) in the notebook I take with me, so if I get stuck, I can read or just point! #culturetrav
replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A2: Yeah, when I was hospitalized in Prague last year. I don't speak Czech, and only 2 or 3 people in the entire clinic spoke English. Lots of gesturing ensued. I just took everything nice and slow and tried to keep a good sense of humor. #CultureTrav

replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A2 Yes, travelling to many countries where English is not the first language used, I've been able to communicate using a few well learned phrases, and a willingness to attempt to connect. A smile goes along way towards people wanting to help. #CultureTrav

replying to @Nicolette_O @Nicolette_O A2: I moved to China for 6 months and didn't speak a word. I was very overwhelmed to begin with but used a lot of gestures to get by. I then started taking Mandarin classes which helped but mostly just going out on my own and talking to people was the key #CultureTrav
