Q8: What advice do you have for someone who doesn’t go hiking very often or that might be new to hiking? #InspireToWander

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8: Take it easy, pick an easier hike to get started. Then work your way up to tougher hikes. That way you're not in over your head & you can fully enjoy the adventure! #InspireToWander

A8 #inspiretowander What I said before, let someone know where you’re going, start off with short walks & build up. Take a friend along, have that phone & do some research ahead of time.

A8: You don’t have to be an experienced hiker to get out and explore. Most trail maps list the level of difficulty. And many have light and easy trails - like this one in Howth, Ireland! #InspiretoWander

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8:
Start with shorter and well traveled trails.
Shoes are very important! Spend the money!
Socks are too!
Take a LifeStraw on every hike (just in case)
Take more water than you think you will need.
ENJOY! It will be the best “unplug” time you can find!

replying to @JustinLaurenXO @JustinLaurenXO A8 #InspireToWander Watch the altitude! Apart from the steepness and pitch, the altitude! If not used to hiking, even a walk along flat terrain at 5000-6000 ft will be painful. And bring 2x as much water as you think you need.

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8) Take it easy at first, be prepared with the 10 Essentials, get a good map and stay on the trail! If you have an experienced hiker to mentor you, that the best way to get started. This guy was/is my backpacking bodhisatva. #InspireToWander

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8:
1) Start with an easy hike and work your way up.
2) Invest in good hiking boots. Your feet will thank you later.
3) If you’re hiking in bear country, always carry bear spray.
4) Bring water & snacks
5) A positive spirit 🤗

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8: Start off slow and easy. Stick with somewhere familiar, like places in or nearby your town. I was lucky enough to grow up at the foothills of a mountain, so I got to hike it twice a month. But I did simple walks every night after dinner as well. #InspireToWander

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8) I don’t hike as often as I really would like to but for me the important thing to remember is to set your own limits and your own pace. Know what you can do ahead of time, read up on the difficulty of trails, and come prepared for varying weather conditions! #InspiretoWander

A8. In the NY/NJ area, use @nynjtc website to pick an easy trail with cool stuff you want to see. It let's you filter trails based on length, etc. That's how we found so many like #wawayandastatepark in #NewJersey #InspireToWander

replying to @Polymathically @inspiretowander A8: Same goes if you're in a city. I started exploring #SF on my days off. A neighborhood here, a tourist attraction there, hours at a time. I kept building from there. Skip forward a few years, and I've hiked 2/3rds of the city. #InspireToWander

replying to @inspiretowander @inspiretowander A8: Proper footwear is essential. Pay attention to trail markings/signs. These can be confusing at times, but it is important to pay attention for your safety. Stay on the trail. Going off trail can at times be dangerous & harmful to the surrounding environment. #InspireToWander
