#pttravel A2: well ... it helps, certainly.

I mean, it depends which country. If you travel to somewhere where people don't expect you to know their language (Cambodia) it's easier than where they might (Spain).

replying to @LixHewett #pttravel My first hostel experience, I was the only woman in an 8-bed dorm. No issues. A later hostel had a dude jerking off at night and shaking the structure, but I was with a friend then and didn't realize till she told me the next day. I'm too prissy for hostels, but still.

But Indians across states are very diverse. The culture, cuisine, language all differ. It's like several countries within one country. #pttravel 😀

A1. My favorite stereotype is that “Africa is really dangerous”. Aside from the fact that it’s a huge and very disparate mass of land where obviously not all parts are equally safe/dangerous/whatever. it’s really no more or less safe than the US (my home country) #PTTravel

Good god, absolutely false. You can get away with English most places, assuming you're not a dick. I'm Spanish myself, and Barcelona and Paris are probably the hardest places in Europe I've been for an English speaker -- and it was fine. We got phones, tourists, maps. #pttravel https://t.co/wpCRMJkgaw

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A2 I don't think you do but it makes it easier if you do - I enjoy travelling in latin America as I speak Spanish but you can't speak them all. I do think you ought to learn at the very least 'thank you' in the local language though!

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2 #pttravel We've been to many countries where we can't speak the language. We always learn and/or write out basic phrases before we go but you'd be surprised how much you can figure out with hand signals. Also, being English speakers helps us, it is a second language for many.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2: Totally false. I always try and learn a few phrases in the language to get by and at the end of the day you will get there, we are all human after all. Alternatively go to language school in the country. I’m currently in Spanish school in Ecuador to do just tht #PTTravel

A2. I’ve found most places we can get by with a few basic words and lots of charades. The only exception was China. That one was hard, to figure out bus/train stops. #PTTravel

#pttravel A2: as an introvert, i find it hard sometuimes travelling places I don't know the language. I get embarassed and awkward trying to speak words in foreign tongues & it makes me want to crawl away and die in a hole.

Plus I felt so safe out there, the people are so lovely #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2. False. I’ve been to places where I couldn’t speak more than a few basic, necessary phases. I used a lot of charades/miming and smiling. Make a genuine effort to at least learn greetings and the people will appreciate it. #PTTravel

The worst myth or advice I've been given is not to travel because it's too dangerous. Planes crash, people get murdered, food poisoning, malaria, robberies, the list is endless.
I've survived! It's really not that bad & you just remain careful

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2. It’s easy enough to make the physical journey to a country if you can’t speak the language but it’s much harder to transition psychologically. Even learning the basics can help with that though. #PTTravel

A2. Only a fraction of communication is verbal. Language helps, but it isn't essential.
However, I say that as a native English speaker with really poor language skills. I want to be so much better at speaking other languages, but just don't have any confidence. #pttravel
