#pttravel A2: well ... it helps, certainly.

I mean, it depends which country. If you travel to somewhere where people don't expect you to know their language (Cambodia) it's easier than where they might (Spain).

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2 It's bit tough to communicate properly but its not impossible. Non-verbal communication always helps a lot #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A2 I don't think you do but it makes it easier if you do - I enjoy travelling in latin America as I speak Spanish but you can't speak them all. I do think you ought to learn at the very least 'thank you' in the local language though!

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2 #pttravel We've been to many countries where we can't speak the language. We always learn and/or write out basic phrases before we go but you'd be surprised how much you can figure out with hand signals. Also, being English speakers helps us, it is a second language for many.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2: Totally false. I always try and learn a few phrases in the language to get by and at the end of the day you will get there, we are all human after all. Alternatively go to language school in the country. Iā€™m currently in Spanish school in Ecuador to do just tht #PTTravel

A2. Iā€™ve found most places we can get by with a few basic words and lots of charades. The only exception was China. That one was hard, to figure out bus/train stops. #PTTravel

#pttravel A2: as an introvert, i find it hard sometuimes travelling places I don't know the language. I get embarassed and awkward trying to speak words in foreign tongues & it makes me want to crawl away and die in a hole.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2. False. Iā€™ve been to places where I couldnā€™t speak more than a few basic, necessary phases. I used a lot of charades/miming and smiling. Make a genuine effort to at least learn greetings and the people will appreciate it. #PTTravel

replying to @LixHewett @LixHewett A2 definitely false, however I wish more of us Brits would attempt to learn the language when going abroad - it's embarrassing seeing how entitled we are in other countries! #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2. Itā€™s easy enough to make the physical journey to a country if you canā€™t speak the language but itā€™s much harder to transition psychologically. Even learning the basics can help with that though. #PTTravel

A2. Only a fraction of communication is verbal. Language helps, but it isn't essential.
However, I say that as a native English speaker with really poor language skills. I want to be so much better at speaking other languages, but just don't have any confidence. #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2 totally false. But generally you need to speak English unless the country shares your own language, as thatā€™s how countries will communicate with tourists. I hate how lazy us brits and Americans are with our language šŸ™ #PTtravel
