A1 Overtourism can be many things - crowds, callous disregard for locals, insta obsession, bucket list sights, fleeting visits with no local spend etc. Is anything worth a queue like this? #PTTravel

replying to @BudgetBreakBlog @BudgetBreakBlog @kate_frankie Yes, some wildlife can’t survive tourist encounters. Trees take hundreds of years to grow and are stamped on, drawn on etc. Coral snapped and broken, shells removed for “souvenirs” #pttravel

replying to @BudgetBreakBlog @BudgetBreakBlog @kate_frankie Yes! Habitat degradation or loss, habituation of animals, littering, leaving "relicts" of a visit (the opposite of a #leavenotrace philosophy) are all symptoms of overtourism in natural areas #pttravel #takithame

SouthernerSays

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A1 it means too many people in an area. I think it changes things for people who care and those who are just going for the gram will still go sadly. #PTTravel

replying to @biggsytravels @biggsytravels @kate_frankie We've been to Venice a dozen times and probably spend 10 minutes in St Mark's Square (before 8am). There's far more off the beaten path and you can easily spend money with locals rather than the central tourist-centred traps ;-) #pttravel

BudgetBreakBlog

replying to @tweetinghelena @tweetinghelena @kate_frankie Totally agree! And although it's tourists doing it, I think it's on authorities to regulate numbers with permits and quotas or have park staff there to stop people #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2 my hometown of Niagara falls and where we are now in Niagara-on-the-lake. The infrastructure cannot handle the amount of tourism and people become frustrated with the waits, lack of parking and places to stay #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A1. For me it’s an inevitable byproduct of overpopulation. It’s people inundating a location, overwhelming the local population and fundamentally changing the culture in the process. #PTTravel

A2 #PTTravel You can't really take issue with this, because most of the crowd are Indians, some of whom, I think, regard it as a sort of pilgrimage.

vickyinglis13

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie The "leakage" from the local economy. Cash goes to big tour or cruise companies at the expense of local businesses and communities, and there's no source of funds to protect resources or to implement things to manage the impact #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie a2 - alot of discussion in the states about our US National Parks being "loved to death" Obvious concerns about damage to pristine areas taking decades to recover. Of course - in the great outdoors its usually on a short hike into the back-country to escape the masses. #Pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I don’t think all crowds of people visiting sites are over tourism. Like this long line at the Blarney Stone - I think this place can cope, and it’s managed like a Disney ride. #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I think one example of over tourism is the Long Neck Karen tribe in Thailand. Would they still pile brass rings round their necks if tourists didn’t visit?

Taj Mahal in India was crowded.
