Lots of excursions I have taken on cruises have clearly been with local companies employing local people. Yes there are exceptions, usually big ticket excursions like seaplanes. But when you keep it simple, it's always local folk doing the tours.

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith @kate_frankie I could not agree more! A great alternative in Canada is the BC Ferries Great Bear Rainforest cruise from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. Some 16 hours daylight midsummer. @BCFerries #bcferries #pttravel

A2. I haven't got the pic on this phone, but I was on the train to Mallaig once (not the steam train) and everyone got up from their seat to take a pic of the Glenfinnan viaduct. Badly. Through dirty windows, with the back of someone's head in a corner of the shot. #pttravel

A3 Instead of Croatia, check out gorgeous Montenegro. Instead of Rome, Venice or Florence, go to Bologna, Trento or Naples.
Pick smaller cities and towns to give your accommodation £££. Don't always base yourself in the capital.
Buy tickets for public transport too
