A5 #PTTravel Buying souvenirs at local markets can help, but also shop local shops & restaurants. This is where an app like @TripAdvisor can help.

A5. I like to hire local people (e.g., as guides or porters in Africa) where possible or shop at local art communes. Souvenirs don't have to be part of the answer but can contribute as least. #pttravel https://t.co/KsZqQZWVqW

A5 #PTTravel Only if you examine them carefully, and ensure the souvenirs are locally produced. An Adelaide shopkeeper told me there's more 'aboriginal art' produced in Taiwan than the First Nation's people ever made!

A5 Paying appropriately for local services can be startling. At a Philippine resort hotel, the service wasn't the greatest. I decided to tip only 10% rather than 15%. Our server was so thrilled that he crawled up a coconut tree and served us custom-made coconut milk. #PTTravel

A5. One thing often not mentioned is overpaying for goods & services because you believe people need charity. That disrupts local economies & leads to such things as taxis favouring picking up foreigners, who for example tip when local cultures say not to. #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A5- I buy very few souvenirs for myself when I travel, but when do, try to buy them that are made locally. And not massed produced.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A5) It’s a hard one as you want to support the local economy and not get scammed in the process 🤔 🤷🏽‍♀️ #PTTravel

A5 I think we can all do a little bit by looking for local crafts but also local cafes/restaurants and tipping locals for services that you'd give back home (in appropriate amounts)

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A5 I definitely think it contributes to helping the economy if you are buying from locals especially when they are showing off their skills & craftmanship #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A5 getting off the resort, visiting a local bar or restaurant, booking an excursion and spending some dollars out and about is a good way in the #Caribbean #PTTravel
