replying to @DawnCorleone @DawnCorleone @kate_frankie Wow! That looks fascinating! I would love to wander around there :) #PTTravel
replying to @SidewalkSafari @SidewalkSafari @aandj8804 @kate_frankie Great idea. I like leaving books at hotels who have a library collection for guests. #pttravel
replying to @aandj8804 @aandj8804 @kate_frankie #pttravel I bought a leather flight bag in the Khan el Khalili. The shopkeeper showed me certificates that he supplied leather to Yves St Laurent. I believe him; that bag lasted me over 25 years!

@kate_frankie A cliché, but it's hard to beat the atmosphere of a German Christmas Market!

replying to @aandj8804 @aandj8804 @kate_frankie Thanks, I had the money - she needed it more than me anyway so it all was ok :) #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie @JKatzaman Yes, the “Ladies Market” and the electronics market in Hong Kong had some good items. #pttravel
RT @GWMtravels: @kate_frankie A2. Artwork.
Usually small items. These are from Tanzania, Iceland and Santa Barbara

replying to @JKatzaman @JKatzaman Well, take heart that not that long ago some 40 percent of the 🇺🇸 U.S. population was at least partly of 🇩🇪 German descent. So, those mugs were likely at least part German. :-) #PTTravel
RT @aok_NW: A3 #PTTravel The Spice Market of Istanbul. The sellers were aggressive, you couldn’t look at something too long. I remember o…
A5 #PTTravel Buying souvenirs at local markets can help, but also shop local shops & restaurants. This is where an app like @TripAdvisor can help.
A5. I like to hire local people (e.g., as guides or porters in Africa) where possible or shop at local art communes. Souvenirs don't have to be part of the answer but can contribute as least. #pttravel https://t.co/KsZqQZWVqW
A5 #PTTravel Only if you examine them carefully, and ensure the souvenirs are locally produced. An Adelaide shopkeeper told me there's more 'aboriginal art' produced in Taiwan than the First Nation's people ever made!
replying to @heywhatsupcourt @heywhatsupcourt @kate_frankie Haha, here’s a close up! A few non goldfish mixed in. #pttravel
replying to @5to9traveller @5to9traveller Jealous :) I've been 3 times and Jim hasn't been to Ecuador yet......:) :) :) #PTTravel
replying to @matthew_ftravel @matthew_ftravel @kate_frankie Yes! Agreed. We go every year. #pttravel
A5 Paying appropriately for local services can be startling. At a Philippine resort hotel, the service wasn't the greatest. I decided to tip only 10% rather than 15%. Our server was so thrilled that he crawled up a coconut tree and served us custom-made coconut milk. #PTTravel
replying to @StromfieldAdvs @StromfieldAdvs @kate_frankie That was the impression I got through most of Egypt. Haggling is less stressful when you know you are helping someone else out. <3 #pttravel
replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW This is the one I went into and just happily got pulled from one shop to another. I had no money on me and just said no after the initial pitch. I had time to kill so I didn't mind. I can imagine it being quite intimidating for people though #PTTravel
RT @5to9traveller: @kate_frankie Definitely one of my favourite past times in Europe on a Sundays. I really kinda like that most shops are…

replying to @DrVoyageur @DrVoyageur It was the red, white and blue of the beer mugs that took me more aback. No temptation, though. It was a Saturday afternoon, and the stores were closed. #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A1: None! Although we do bring back magnets for family. #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie @aok_NW It sounds like fun going to a market with no money and a lot of free time! It probably frustrated the shop keepers though! lol. #pttravel

replying to @matthew_ftravel @matthew_ftravel @kate_frankie I really loved the dazzling colors of the markets in Morocco. And, the divine smells of spices and mint. #pttravel
RT @aok_NW: A4 #pttravel Hanoi, Vietnam’s Old Quarter was fascinating. You could find just about anything & not cost a lot of money. https…
A5. One thing often not mentioned is overpaying for goods & services because you believe people need charity. That disrupts local economies & leads to such things as taxis favouring picking up foreigners, who for example tip when local cultures say not to. #PTTravel
RT @char_x0: @kate_frankie A3) these cool souvenirs in Macau 🇲🇴 #PTTravel https://t.co/6sJT1Zu9uC
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2: Not too much- I don’t think I was ever much of a souvenir collector. Aside from pictures :) #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A4 Has to be the fabulous Muslim Market in Xian or Khan el Khalili in Cairo, but Skipton market in #yorkshire is excellent too 😊 #PTTRAVEL
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie A5- I buy very few souvenirs for myself when I travel, but when do, try to buy them that are made locally. And not massed produced.
#PTTravel
replying to @SidewalkSafari @SidewalkSafari Yessssss - we didn't realise we could buy them until Madrid! (Last year) we are going to Colmar this year and will be definitely looking to keep them! #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie @aok_NW #pttravel In the Arab world, the phrase 'Mafeesh Faloose' (I have no money) will usually get a smile and a back-off from all but the most persistant!
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A4: The markets of #CDMX are too cool. #PTTravel
replying to @JKatzaman @JKatzaman No temptation for me either. I'd never such a thing while travelling. #PTTravel

replying to @Travelnpack @Travelnpack @kate_frankie If you can buy it at home, why buy it there? It just adds weight to your luggage! Plus, you feel good when you are supporting the local economy! :) #pttravel
replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW I’d really like to see this. Looks like a feast for the senses. #pttravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie Thank you. I see that done so very often. #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A5) It’s a hard one as you want to support the local economy and not get scammed in the process 🤔 🤷🏽♀️ #PTTravel
