A3- Visit places in the offseason. It helps the local environment by not adding to the peak season trash and locals appreciate the business. Plus it can save you some cash.

My general answer is the colder the country or region - the more responsible, while the hotter the less so.

Compare Canada to India, or Alaska to Panama.

Of course exceptions (Singapore !) But then again there is China. 50% of all the world's plastic pollution

#pttravel Also note the largest plastic polluters are countries who ... have a lax attitude to regulation and no real accountability. I'm looking at you, China. Also Philippines. "If in doubt, chuck it out." - there's a lot of water around both of those countries.

replying to @StuartMHurlbut @StuartMHurlbut @kate_frankie Some places have their own alternative developments. You can, for instance, drink the tap water in remoter parts of Vanuatu - because the water is piped in from huge vats in the villages, that are filled with rainwater. #pttravel local, and, weather-permitting, sustainable.

Best thing to do is pay attention to tours / guides/ companies and only hire and use the local ones.

There's no need for tourists to be hiring as a driver in St Martin a French kid who is on the island for a gap year, when local kids who live there need the work.
