Ethics of writers, photographers and influencers

replying to @1Dad1Kid @1Dad1Kid I do wonder how it can really be recommended if people don't use it. I build any gear into trips. Did noise cancelling headphones once and tried all of them out first #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A2. There are always ethical considerations, which is one of the reasons I don’t tend to photograph people. I do try to abide by rules as well. I resisted photographing the Sistine Chapel, for instance. #PTTravel

A3 I always used to worry my photography wasn't great. It wasn't edited as much as other accounts but actually it is a good representation of my trips. I try to give an accurate account each time. I really think that's best for the audience

A1. In my opinion, the bigger issue has to be the many writers who do not reveal that they received compensation such as a free hotel stay in exchange for an article. With that mentioned readers can judge for themselves fairness. #pttravel

RTWBarefoot
1

replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW I suspect it'd depend on the influencer. Like, if I started advertising big boots or talking about 5* resorts, people might start asking questions, but I'm much more niche than the average blogger I suspect! #pttravel

A4 For me, it makes no sense to promote something you don't use. I think its about integrity for me. Explain properly why you have/haven't & why you're recommending it

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A3. Again, I think it depends. If you’re writing or photographing to inform then accuracy is essential, but if you’re storytelling or recording memories then there’s more room for creative license and selective memory. #PTTravel

RTWBarefoot

replying to @DonNadeau @DonNadeau we were discussing that earlier, from the opposite side. Like, I think people *expect* things to have been compensated for, so sometimes I feel there should be a #NotAnAd hashtag. #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie Yes. Last year I looked something up for my folks, a via ferrata in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. I found a blog post with a glaring mistake in geography, there's two waterfalls sharing the same name, but in different areas + they used photos of the Italian Dolomites, not Scotland. I was so mad #PTTravel

Confused. How can someone promote something they have not used themselves? I’ve read about ppl blogging about places they never been to. Where is the credibility of the “influencer”?
#PTTravel

RTWBarefoot

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel Depends on the influencer, and on the audience, I think. Like, if you're a cruise blogger and your audience is mostly cruisers, then it probably matters less than if you're say, a hiker-blogger (accessibility thoughts)

replying to @vickyinglis13 @kate_frankie Accurate information is the hill I will die on. I really hate when bloggers/instagrammers make up names for places. A5 I think influencers who have gained their position through experience and expertise tend to. Those who rely on looks or some other fortunate relationship, maybe less so. I think we all know influencers we’d trust more than others. #pttravel
