replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel In Amesbury. Just made it ... the long silences will be because I'm looking for pictures; didn't have time to sort any out beforehand.

Joining #PTTravel from North Yorkshire. Strange weekend, quiet at home now that we’re a 2 rather than 3, having dropped junior in Manchester on Friday to start his new life!

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I'm oki, recovering from a cold. Am in Glasgow, Scotland. #pttravel

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith Great to have you with us. My photos can be either really easy to find or really difficult. No in between 😆 #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie yeh a couple of days ago I wandered ocver to a dead football stadium, and a couple of evenings over the last two weeks me and my flatmate have taken long walks into the southern suburbs. #pttravel

Q1 What do you think of as a hidden gem on your travels or when exploring at home?

replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie it is still used, for local football, and when I was there the groundsmen were repainting the halfway line, but a few decades ago, top-flight football was played here. #pttravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A1: conceptually it's a hard question to answer. Because it depends on what's popular and what isn't, and on how big the town is. Like, some entire *countries* are 'hidden gems' (Benin), yet in other places the 'hidden gem' could be a backstreet cafe.

A1 #PTTravel I think a hidden gem is in the eyes of the beholder. It can be something not a lot of people know about. The North Coast has a lot of hidden gems I think.

A1 It’s about the lesser towns and cities for me - so many to explore in every country. As Ian would say - everywhere is interesting! #PTTravel

A1 #PTTravel Anything that's not in the guidebook, or I wasn't expecting. For instance, I suspect not many have heard of La Alberca

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A1 The people and their hospitality. #PTTravel

A1- Hidden gems are those places nobody really talks about, but just as amazing or more than the places that get all of the attention. It could be a city or hidden oasis within a city

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie It depends on the season. If it’s summer, you’ll probably see crowds, otherwise not so much. #pttravel

Q2 Which hidden gems in your home region would you like to tell other travellers about and why?

A1 (I shall set aside my dislike for the phrase!)
Usually a little cafe or food place just started out. Had a lovely meal in Mae Sai which we found by accident #PTTravel

replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie #pttravel Or, it could be somewhere that's off the normal tourist beat, but is extremely popular with local people. We found such a place in Cyprus; the only language we heard spoken was Greek.

A2 #PTTravel I posted about the stepping stones at Swallowhead Spring ... the source of the River Kennet ... only this morning!

A2 Not really hidden, but I much prefer Saltburn or Staithes to Whitby, for example. Beautiful coast but significantly fewer people. #PTTravel

replying to @NomadKeith
@NomadKeith @kate_frankie Then the question is "what does 'hidden' mean?'. If something is popular, is it 'hidden', even if it's only locals who know about it?
I guess the only requirement is it has to be a 'gem' - ie somewhere halfway decent.
Kirkby-in-Ashfield is hidden .... #pttravel :D :p
