Q1 Most places have some history of conflict but have you ever travelled somewhere that is actively in conflict? Do you know if anywhere you've travelled has been under occupation?

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A1: back in 1994 I travelled across Europe to visit a penpal. In Belgrade.

While that part of Yugoslavia wasn't in conflict at the time, there were a large number of UN-branded lorries along the railway line, and I knew the front line was * over there somewhere *.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A1: My mother nicknamed me 'Che Guevara' because in her eyes I have a habit of doing this; I have never been to an active warzone - she just still thinks the world is at it was in 1983 ...

A1 #pttravel I haven't & don't think I'd want to encounter it. I'm not sure how I would handle the idea of waking up in the morning & finding out the army took over overnight.

replying to @BPackersGuide @BPackersGuide oh i forgot about Ukraine!

#pttravel A1: I visited Ukraine not long after the crisis in early 2014. Maidan Square was still full of pillboxes and soldiers and *lots* of grafitti / memorials. Strangely I don't have any pics to hand of it!

A1 The only place I was at while in conflict was when stationed in the Philippines. Thirty months of travel restrictions weren't pretty, but at least we left a year before anyone knew Mount Pinatubo was a volcano. #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I'm wearing a black pair of short lyrca leggings, ostensibly to keep my running leggings up. I think they themselves have risen up, merged with my bum-bag, and the whole thing has become a three-piece-mess.

replying to @5to9traveller @5to9traveller @kate_frankie yeh. I nearly went to Syria in 2010 with my friend but we decided we couldn't spare the time needed at that point so we went to Italy instead. [She's fond of ancient stuff] #pttravel

replying to @vickyinglis13 @vickyinglis13 @kate_frankie how big is that plane? I've always wondered. I always imagined it like a troop carrier flight with little sense of 'amenities'. #pttravel

replying to @vickyinglis13 @vickyinglis13 @kate_frankie Oh, cool, glad you enjoyed it. My parkrun was also very leisurely, I didn't push, I just did a calm and casual run. It was my slowest ever run, but also my best. :) #pttravel

A1 I have been to any places in active conflict and for work that would not be allowed. Personally, I wouldn't go into those countries or close by. I do wonder what would happen if conflict broke out while on a trip.
I was in Fiji during a coup in 2006
