A4 There also is a good war museum in Kiev with many exhibit from Nazis. As a German it felt a bit strange when other visitors realized that I could read German documents and engravings #pttravel

A4 #pttravel I tried to post these earlier, but was having computer problems. This was Arlington Cemetery's changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown. Rediscovered pics from 2000.

replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie Yes, was early 1990's sometime. Wanted to wander around awhile then catch a flight to Darwin I had heard about. Was told there was no such flight. #pttravel

A5 #PTTravel Of course, mention should be made of them, but they shouldn't be actively promoted, or touted as an 'attraction'

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A5: It's no different to reading about it in a textbook in a history lesson? Indeed some of these places, they're not even taught in our schools in history. So think of them as 'history come alive'.

Without history, we are blindly heading forward into chaos.

A5 Although memorials can be hard to see, the alternative of forgetting and repeating history is far worse. #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie A4. The museum of the Gold Coast regiment in Kumasi, Ghana was really interesting. We don't learn colonial history + they were so instrumental to independence from the UK. The Ghanaian army were very involved in African peacekeeping, so I learned a lot about Rwanda too #PTTravel

A5 I think we are responsible to make sure that certain events in history are not forgotten. Wars and conflicts are part of that. Traveling for me is not being on vacation. If you truly want to explore our world, there is no way around "dark" chapters of history #pttravel

replying to @Morology @Morology @kate_frankie When I was at Uni, 93-95, "Free East Timor" was *the* student activism call-to-action of choice. #pttravel As a result the name stayed with me for years so when I was plotting a world trip in 2014, it was always high on the list. "To see what the fuss was about."

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A5: It's important to highlight history, whether it's dark or not. Dark tourism could especially benefit education I think. What happened in the past and what can we learn from it to avoid it happening in the future

replying to @JKatzaman @JKatzaman I think it is not only about not forgetting but also about comprehending what war actually is since many people "play" way in computer games or watch movies about it. Good memorials and museums help us to understand what being in a war actually means #PTTravel

A5 #pttravel That's a deep question. I think if people want to go, they should be able to. There's a lot of dark tourism out there. Going to see Chernobyl could be considered dark tourism, but people want to see it including me. I guess it's in the eyes of the beholder.
