Conflict/military regions & memorials

replying to @BPackersGuide @BPackersGuide @JKatzaman #pttravel It's also about getting the other side of the story. The museums and memorials we visited in Vietnam are a case in point.

Q6 What advice would you give fellow travellers on visiting areas of conflict/occupation or sites of memorials?
RT @MaaikevanKuijk: @kate_frankie #pttravel A5: It's important to highlight history, whether it's dark or not. Dark tourism could especiall…

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A6: don't go in thinking you already know what happened. Especially if you only know one side of the story.
RT @aok_NW: A5 #pttravel That's a deep question. I think if people want to go, they should be able to. There's a lot of dark tourism out…

RT @Morology: @kate_frankie A5: I find the tourism industry as a whole to be annoying. I do not travel to see such places. They are there,…

A6 I wouldn't visit conflict zones unless I really have to (e.g., for work). For memorials: don't just walk past them. Take a minute to find out what it is about and why a memorial is there in the first place. I think this goes hand in hand with slow travel. #pttravel
A6 #pttravel Know exactly what you're getting yourself into. I wouldn't go bumbling into it. Hire a professional guide who understands it & will try to keep you safe.
A5 Be respectful when visiting memorials. If visiting conflict sites, why? You might want to have your affairs in order before you go there. #PTTravel
replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith @BPackersGuide @JKatzaman This was my impression as well. We always learnt the name 'Vietnam War' in school (the Netherlands). However, when we visited Vietnam we learned it's called the American War over there. Such an eye-opener. So many different perspectives #pttravel
replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith @BPackersGuide @JKatzaman I feel exactly like this about many places. I visit their museums to find out the other perspectives too. What is the quote - the first casualty of war is the truth? #PTTravel

replying to @Morology @kate_frankie wait, isn't dark tourism about joining tours to slums, favelas, ghettos and such living horrors? #pttravel
A6 #PTTravel Be respectful; try not to act the tourist too much. And, keep your opinions to yourself ... at least, till you've left the site.
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie #pttravel A6: if you're determined to visit a conflict zone, either an active one or somewhere recently settled, think about why you want to go & if your presence there is strictly necessary.
Then, consider going on an organised group rather than alone.

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith @JKatzaman Very true, I visited atomic bombing museums in many countries, esp. Japan and the US. Being confronted with how different both sides feel about that was sth. kind of scary to me #PTTravel

replying to @vickyinglis13 @kate_frankie A few years ago I saw the Gallipoli exhibition by Weta Workshop at Te Papa in Wellington, New Zealand. It was incredible and so affecting to see the stories rendered tangible in that way #PTTravel
#pttravel A6: Always be respectful to the sites, memorials and people you visit. Try to not let prejudice cloud your judgement - try to go in with an open mind. Take in as much of information as possible and reflect after your visit
replying to @Morology @Morology A whole range of different aspects of tourism. I think @RTWBarefoot did a pod on this, if I'm not totally mistaken #PTTravel

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith Good point. You can find yourself in a lot of hot water being critical of the military or the government of a foreign land. #pttravel

I've done a couple on the rights & responsibilities, but more from a 'culturo-political' than an 'ethical' standpoint (eg LGBTQIA+ travel to Uganda).
