replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel Amesbury ... where Spring is springing, but we're warned it won't last for long.
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie Good evening from Aberdeenshire. Not sure I could have timed a trip to Hidden Treasure Tearoom better if I tried. #PTTravel
replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith @kate_frankie #pttravel it's been bright and sunny up here all weekend, but since in a couple of weeks I'm doing some hiking in the hills I am fully expecting a mini-blizzard to come by then
replying to @findinganeish @findinganeish @kate_frankie haha, apt decor on the teacup! #pttravel

Q1 The shipwreck of Endurance has been found over 100 years after Shackleton's voyage. Which famous expedition route & old navigation interests you and why?

@kate_frankie hm #pttravel i have not thought about this.
Does it have to be a sea-faring one? I'm not good with boats, because I think I'd get bored after a while.

I've been up since 4am due to a virtual event in Taiwan I needed to attend.
Its been a long week but not a bad one. I need to get out for a good run tomorrow

A1 #pttravel The Franklin expedition. I've read Michael Palin's excellent book, and seen the highly fictionalised TV series. And, taking part in the search was HMS 'Herald', captained by Captain Henry Kellett. No evidence he was an ancestor, but I'd like to think he was!
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot No, any expedition you like. Question just came to mind because of the news #PTTravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie #pttravel If land is allowed then the full Silk Road, the whole Marco Polo adventure, would be quite grand. I've done bits.
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie #pttravel fair. :)
I like the idea of those old explorers, but I'm conscious their application was incredibly colonial. and religious.
replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW Oh really?! Its come around quicker than I realised #PTTravel

@kate_frankie I thought about going for a run today.
I did not go for a run today.

A1: Not really an expedition route, more like a navigation one. I'd love to travel on the old Silk Road at some point. I think that would be fascinating. #PTTravel

A1- It's not so much the route, but I would have loved to see the ships coming into 🇬🇷#Rhodes back in the day

Q2 Have you ever used maps or a compass when you travel? If so, were they paper/equipment or an app on your phone?

A1 #pttravel The mouth of the Columbia River is known to be treacherous. One example was the 1906 wreck of the Peter Iredale. You can still see it today on the beach.

@kate_frankie #pttravel A2: I use the OS Maps all the time, these days usually on my phone but I do like the paper maps.
I've used compasses but I tend to prefer to use maps and look for distinguishing points. There's always a cairn. :D
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie we could encourage each other but I know that would Not Work Well. #pttravel
(Un)Fortunately we are getting more daylight and consistently warmer weather here so my days of procrastination might be ending ... :D

A2: I use maps all the time, on my phone. However, when I first started backpacking, back in 2007-2008, I used to rely on paper maps. The first job when I would arrive in a new city was to pass by the touristic office and get a map. #PTTravel

A2 #pttravel Yes, that’s why my phone is so valuable to me. I have both maps & compass. I have been stuck a few times where I have had to look at a map.
replying to @OanaRoua
@OanaRoua yeh I still do that, tho usually these days it's from my hostel or wherever.
Paper maps are great because you can write on them, they are visible in bright sunshine/glare, and they don't have a battery life. #pttravel
A2 #PTTravel Wouldn't venture far from tarmac without them. And, it's got to be paper maps and the good old Silva compass. You really don't want your batteries running out in the middle of the North York Moors!

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie Following the great adventurers like Polynesians would be my expedition of choice - halfway through a great book 'The Human Cosmos' which reminds me how they navigated without charts or instruments #PTTravel A1
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot I used to keep the maps as souvenirs, with all the writing on them. I may still have some of them somewhere, in my flat in Romania #pttravel
