replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie At the start of April I'm hiking around the isle of Arran with @JordanJaunt so there will almost certainly be maps involved at least.

The advantage of a small island is there are only two directions. And if you're going uphill you're taking the wrong one. #pttravel

replying to @OanaRoua @OanaRoua When we hiked the Pennine Way we did so with a guidebook written by people who'd hiked the Pennine Way many times, & it was detailed enough to give *exactly* that level of info. ['turn left at the gate with the blue stone on top of the wall next to it' kind of thing] #pttravel

A6 #pttravel Know what you’re doing. Have you done it before? Try doing it around town & see how well you do navigating that way. Some people have no sense of direction, so I wouldn’t just go halfway around the world & assume you can find your way around.

A6 #pttravel Map and compass are useless if you don't know how to use them. Buy a book, do a course, or practice on safe ground.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel learn to read a map. Learn to read a contour line. Don't put your compass near anthing with an electrical charge. Accept that if you go on Kinder Scout you *will* get lost regardless of what equipment you have.

replying to @Travel_Session A6- Gauge your surroundings. Sometimes a paper map can make you stick out as a tourist and a target for scammers and pickpockets.
