replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel I'm in Amesbury ... wishing I hadn't had that third glass of wine, and shattered from WATCHING the Leeds Triathlon on TV,

I've been out for a run (Riverside where I do parkrun), washing and packing some things for holiday š„³ and now relaxing.

Q1 Which places have you visited that felt like you were off the beaten path and why?
A1 Bancroft Tower in Worcester, Massachusetts. Itās not really a destination we just happened to see it from the road. https://t.co/FGAvjen6Gx #PTTravel https://t.co/Rz8SDQdmjl
A1 #pttravel If I do go off the beaten path, itās usually just in my country. I stay in the big cities on international trips. Denio, Nevada on the Oregon/Nevada border was definitely off the beaten path.
A1 #PTTravel Funnily enough, the Lake District! My cousin, a Park Ranger, told me that visitors rarely venture more than 400 yards from their car. So, once you've passed that distance, you can, if you avoid the more frequented routes, have the fells to yourself.
A1 I thought I had finally gotten off the beaten path in Kaiserslautern, Germany, finally seeing no English or American traces. Then I turned the corner to see Harry's Gift Shop in all it's one-block glory. I was sad. #PTTravel

replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie #pttravel a volcano on a small island in Vanuatu? (Gaua)
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot #pttravel Well, yes! Haven't been there, but I heard it's not too difficult to get away from the crowds.
replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW Now that is off the tourist track! I do like borders where you can drive through or walk across easily. I also think those little towns with a couple of thousand population would be cool in the USA #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel everywhere is interesting. It's hard to put that into defineable objects as 'gems' is very relative, but it's a general truth.

@kate_frankie #pttravel A2: but, in terms of my personal experiences:
a) guidebooks
b) local advice
c) completely by accident because I was passing and happened to be looking in the right direction at the time.
c) happens rather more often than you'd think. I blame ADHD.
A2 #pttravel I usually stumble over them, although I will plan them in trips. This cavern in SW Missouri was an unplanned stop. Missouri is the place to go if you like spelunking.

A2 #pttravel Local knowledge is good ... ask hotel concierges, barmen, shopkeepers, etc. I would say avoid tour guides ... but Samir, in Morocco, was an absolute fount of information.
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I've been away recently so not done any runs for a while. Walked a heck of a lot though. #pttravel I would go for more runs but the weather up here is not proving useful (occasional torrential rain).
