Welcome to a festive #PTTravel Chat!
Where are you joining us from? Do you celebrate during the holiday season?

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel I'm at home in Amesbury. My guests have just departed, and I'm making inroads into the scad of notes, pictures and videos I brought back from Central America.

I'm hosting from North East England.
A rosé wine, olives and feta to prepare me for the rest of decorating the house.
I love it looking festive but wish an elf on the shelf would just do it while I'm out.

replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot I was going to say, that looks awfully festive. #PTTravel

Q1 What reminds you of festive season and does your hometown celebrate any of the holidays at this time?

replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie Around this time, each year, the cloisters at Glasgow University get covered in lights.
Tho when we went this week, it was Graduation Day so was a bit full! #pttravel

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith Can't wait to hear about it! I may be a tad excited ha! #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel a1: i mean, not that i'm aware of, aside from lights on the lampposts and the occasional tree in the local squares.

A1 #pttravel I think of lights & decorating. My little resort town does things like a Festival of Lights & day after Thanksgiving parade. More info here: https://t.co/bpSqbWX0St

A1 #PTTravel Of course, we have the Switching On of the Lights, and a visit by the Rotary Club carrollers ... but they're usually overshadowed by the Solstice and the Lantern Parade (which does involve mulled wine and mince pies!)

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith When is Solstice? Have I missed it? That's a really cool mix of religions and Pagan customs. I like that #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie they're better in the dark but we've not done that yet this year #pttravel

replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW I love that! Totally up my street! I mean, not literally my street but a one I'd like to live near 😁 #PTTravel

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel Night of the 21st/22nd December ... sometimes the night of the 22nd/23rd. Not sure why the 'switch'

A1 Festive season is fun for me. Good memories and now with a new generation (my nephew) although he's often less impressed than me!

RT @NomadKeith: @kate_frankie #pttravel Night of the 21st/22nd December ... sometimes the night of the 22nd/23rd. Not sure why the 'switch'

replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith Does anything official happen or just people individually celebrating? #PTTravel

Q2 Have you travelled (either in home country or away) to visit places that share a festive holiday or that do not celebrate and why?

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel Well, Stonehenge is freely opened to anyone who wishes to come; I believe they have ad hoc ceremonies at Avebury and Castlerigg, too. There may be more.

A2 #pttravel I’ve traveled both here & overseas during the holidays. This was in Berlin, Germany about a weeks before Xmas.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel a2 i once went to Tunisia over New Year, because my then-gf asked me to, and that was very low-key celebrative. I also had a very early bedtime one NYE in Zambia because on NYD I had to get up early to see animals in Botswana.

replying to @RTWBarefoot
@kate_frankie #pttravel I also went with another then-gf to Poland (Zakopane) over Christmas, which was lovely and full of snow and very joyful and celebratory.
Christmas Eve we went to Auschwitz.

replying to @aok_NW @aok_NW I've wanted to do a trip to Germany for Christmas markets for years. Looks great. How did you find it? #PTTravel

A2 #PTTravel I've lived in Australia and Germany. The Aussies celebrate pretty much as we do, except the weather's warmer. Loved Germany for the Christmas markets, the ice-skating ,,, and, sometimes, the snow!

replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie #pttravel a2: i've never been in the relev'nt countries or regions during Eid, Diwali, etc. Would I? Idk, i'm conscious i'd be an interloper and feel awkward. At least here in the UK I can stay at home to avoid/ignore Christmas, Easter, etc.

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie It was a good time. I’d like to do it again & see markets in some other places like Strasbourg, France. #pttravel

Q3 Share photos of anything festive you've enjoyed on day trips at home or on travels.
For any who would like to Bah Humbug, go for it & share your best getting away from it all trips from this time

replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel A3: ... i got nothing. Because I'm neither festive nor humbuggly. I treat Christmas exactly how I treat, say, Eid. Neither are my onions. So I....don't really think either way? I've taken pics of festive city lights in my travels but that's something I'd've done anyway!
