Q2: Trail hazards vary by season, and location. Generally, what season do you think is the most hazardous for #hiking in and out of the #nationalparks? #parkchat

A2 Depends in where you are. Southwest? Summer monsoon season. Pretty much everywhere else, winter. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer #parkchat A2 Late winter into early spring. Smowmelt making mudslides, thunderstorms, flash floods, avalanches all in the same season! 😳

A2. If you are unprepared and take unnecessary risks, any season is hazardous. But I'd go with spring here in the #PNW, when the weather is changeable and rivers are higher and faster than many folks expect. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2) In California no season is really safe when you consider the number of wildfires we've had so far this year. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2 my guess would be summer due to the higher number of people and forgotten threats like heat exhaustion. #parkchat

A2. No doubt shoulder season on slick rock. The ice is no joke and who wants to convince themselves you need spikes when it’s going to be 70+ during the heat of the day? #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2 #ParkChat Late winter/Early spring. Snow will be hard then soft, there’s lots of trail damage, and the weather is super fickle.

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2) Winter. One needs extra gear for winter and rescues are harder. Ice is the real hazard and it could be almost anywhere, as 91% of NPS units experience freezing temps. #Parkchat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2. I typically think of winter being the high hazard season. But it would appear that summer would be more the high hazard tourist season (hazards created by tourists) #ParkChat

A2 I would think the winter months are the worst. Ice on the trails make hiking treacherous, frost bite can kill, and it's scarily easy to get lost in a white out. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2) This may sound odd, but summer was the first season that popped to mind for me. higher danger of overheating, bees, bugs, snakes, more active animals generally, including humans feeling like taking risks. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2) Not sure about season, but whenever there is fog can be interesting. We hiked in very dense fog @BlueRidgeNPS and were later amazed to see how treacherous the route we were taking actually was! The fog made it seem too "safe" (and killed the view) #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2 Generally speaking winter - though I'd rather face any winter hazard than the horrible cloud of smoke that's settled over everything right now! #parkchat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A2) Winter for sure in the PNW at least, one of the stormiest locations on the continent with mountains that can make their own weather, with snow, cold whiteouts, big winds and heavy rain. Still a great time to get out when you can. #Parkchat
