Q6: Have you ever encountered a natural hazard on the trail, or off the trail? Again, what did you do, and what did you learn about it? #nationalparks #parkchat

A6. Falling rock is a MAJOR fear. It doesn’t take much to ruin your day. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6 #parkchat Last week I got detoured by a wildfire on the #PCT. I took the time to observe the fire, consult my maps, call a friend (Yay @Wildwithinher!) and then navigate my way to a safer trail.

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6) I've encountered fallen trees on the trails, I either was able to climb over it or go around it. Another was flooding of a portion of the trail which was too large to deal with & caused me to turn around. #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6) Yes, wicked thunder, lightning and rain storm at 7200 feet in Enchantment Lakes Basin In the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, we had bolts coming down close and frequently. Our tent was pitched in a low spot, we got in and sat on our sleeping pads for two tense hours! #Parkchat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6) This was not at a National Park, but as a child of the Great Lakes, I learned a lesson about rising tides the hard way when I took a trip east. I thought I was going to drown trying to walk back to the shore against the steady pull πŸŒŠπŸšΆπŸ– #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6. Section of the trail covered with wind blown trees, slight detour with map and compass and good to go. #ParkChat

A6 A fallen tree across a trail in Arkansas; I hand-vaulted over it - that was before I realized that poison ivy down South doesn't always have shiny leaves - not chill, dude #ParkChat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer #parkchat A6 Why, just this weekend we had to bushwack @WindCaveNPS when a sleepy bison decided to plop down next to the trail signpost! πŸ™„ We learned that down in prairie grass, bison look like dirt piles and require partner consultation. πŸ˜‚

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6. Fallen trees. We went into a section of Hoosier National Forest several years ago day after huge storm blew thru. Trees were down on the trail Honestly, I don't remember what we did. I think we scurried over them. Other places I've come across fallen trees too. #parkchat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6 Sure! I tend to get myself into tricky situations involving natural hazards with some frequency. Just recently I found myself chest deep in the middle of rapids in a roaring creek with a backpack full of camera gear and my boots in one hand. Pick your ford carefully! #parkchat

replying to @last_adventurer @last_adventurer A6 my partner has all the good stories, all involving travels with his dad. Canoeing on Ross Lake, @NCascadesNPS, a storm came up and blew each canoe in a different direction. Canada, Bowron Lakes, a moose charged and flung about his Grumman canoe.
