Q6 #ParkChat We have “3,200 free-flowing river segments in the United States that are believed to possess one or more "outstandingly remarkable" natural or cultural values judged to be at least regionally significant”. Why is this important? We can we do to keep rivers flowing?

A6. In short, because so many waterways are dammed. Even today, less than ¼ of 1% of America's river are designated Wild & Scenic. I think it's something like 12,000 miles total. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6 Flora and fauna depend on free flowing rivers. Too many dams hurt them. #ParkChat

A6 The biggest issue is working with local and state government to restrict flood plain development. when folks aren’t worried about their house/business flooding, they don’t push for more dams. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6) They are the life blood of our country and a genuine treasure. Only 0.25% of all rivers are protected under the Wild and Scenic Rivers act. We can and should do better. By protecting more waterways, we can keep the rivers flowing. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6) As with the human body, water is essential to the health of the planet and to remain that way rivers must be flowing. #ParkChat

A6 Forgive my tardiness in answering; I was searching for a Psalm verse on this, but couldn't find one - suffice it to say that the ocean is the river's destiny, sort of like the great oneness of the cosmos is our destiny - everything becomes one #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6. A combination of education and political action is needed to raise awareness and protect these areas. This is our natural and cultural heritage, which we should want to pass down to our children. #parkchat
