Unpaved Roads
ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3 Probably happened on the unpaved portion on the @DenaliNPS road. Of course, I wasn’t driving. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS Absolutely! For miles and miles! I go slow, and I'll walk 10 miles to scout if I need to! I'll go anywhere. 😁 #ParkChat

A2. Had major concerns absorbing the cautions of driving to Toroweap in @GrandCanyonNPS. Mostly overdone but important to drive slow. Three hours of driving at 35 mph is not easy. Patience! But worth it, right? #ParkChat

A3- Titus Canyon Rd @DeathValleyNPS is another great high-clearance vehicle road. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS #parkchat A2 hey, that's our favorite backroad area, too! @windcavenps has some excellent roads off the beaten path! Also Sage Creek Rim Rd @badlandsnps is spectacular for wildlife.

A4) Before hitting the unpaved road we check that we have lots of water and food (we carry a 5 gal bladder), plenty of gas, hopefully have cell service, a map, and a good sense of adventure coupled with reasonable caution. #parkchat #travel #adventure

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3 #ParkChat Driving the “4 wheel drive” only backroads in #JoshuaTree #WhereGalsWander

A4 Kick the tires, light the fires, pack a 12v-powered air pump, check the spare, buy a mouth guard, ratchet everything down. Ready, stead, go! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4) I'll admit all I've usually brought is luck, although a pal wisely advised me to have certain things handy in my trunk on long road trips. My biggest concern is a way to communicate or navigate without a cell signal, which I need to be better about! #ParkChat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @Wild_Tribute A3) Visiting the petrified forest at Theodore Roosevelt National Park #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @59NationalParks GOAL? Really, Matt? I'd Get Out And LAUGH. At you. All day long. #ParkChat

A1. The Denali Park Road may be the most spectacular of all. I've traveled it on the park bus, but would love to drive it with my own vehicle. #parkchat

A5 Unpaved roads don’t intimidate me unless they are super gnarly. I live at the end of a 3-mile dirt road; just have to be okay with the car always looking like this. #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. I've been driving on dirt/rock/wet roads since I was a teen and I absolutely love them. And I respect them. I stay on marked trails and I observe the guidelines. I consider off road travel an opportunity to explore, rather than a sport of any kind! #ParkChat

replying to @BarnetteJason @BarnetteJason @59NationalParks I'm ok with that! 😁 #ParkChat

replying to @t_jh2009 @t_jh2009 @59NationalParks #ParkChat A4 read up on it! We took the short road to Zapata Falls near Great Sand Dunes and about ruined our Durango. You needed MORE than 4wd for that thing. We should have read up on it where people actually say, don't do it unless you have a jeep! 😁

A3. Too many to compare, but I'll mention Capitol Reef National Park's Cathedral Valley because I didn't see anyone during an entire day although that's where the highlights of the park are, rather on than the short paved section (photo from Treasured Lands) #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS A6) Joshua Tree has some nice unpaved and scenic paths #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS A6. The Old Mojave Road that travels through Nevada and California is one of my favorite experiences on a dirt road! Also, the roads through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park that take you through the old gold and mail routes. & the Escalante Wilderness in CO! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS #ParkChat A6 well you took my Sage Creek Rim Rd @badlandsnps, but love Old Fall River Rd @RockyNPS was awesome (pictured here). Third is one in @yellowstonenps that shall not be revealed. 😉
