Q2 #ParkChat Have you ever seen a Park road sign which states “No Road Maintenance” on an unpaved road? We try to take these roads because they deter most people. The road at @WindCaveNPS has such a sign and below is what folks miss. What’s your take on driving such roads?

A2 I don't remember seeing any but I'm sure I probably have. I'd go down them! At least see how far I could go #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2) Yes, there's a lot to see beyond the paved paths. As long as we have cell phone service or we saw someone going the other way on the road in the last 10 minutes, we go for it. #parkchat

A2: I just want to be sure my vehicle will not become stuck or disabled, because that would suck. #ParkChat

A2 Are you kidding? Do you know what my deductible is? Neither do I. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2) I don't recall seeing that sign though I've seen plenty of "Maintenance Road Employee Only" type of signage. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2. If conditions are good, we would give it a try. I'm thinking of the access roads to @ChacoCultureNHP, although they probably do get some maintenance. #ParkChat

A2 Not at all! We just know we have to be cautiouswhile driving. That said, we always talk to a ranger about road conditions first. #parkchat

A2 I hesitate to drive these kinds of roads because I have a 2WD camper van. Not exactly the best type of vehicle for these roads. I need at least a minimally maintained gravel road to ensure I don't get stuck. #ParkChat

A2 Actually, I have been on the treacherous road to the Spiral Jetty in Utah - it starts at Golden Spike NHS, so it's kinda National Park related #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2) I don't have the proper vehicle but I love exploring unknown roads. usually by mistake. I scratched up one lease having to back around a narrow bushy road in Montana where firefighters were busy with something or other. All part of the adventure! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2 I have not, mostly because I tend to travel by myself and I thus usually avoid places where I'm not likely to be found for weeks #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2) #Parkchat These roads are typically the best if you are prepared for anything, not recommended for people with medical conditions or require 24/7 cell signal though. I especially enjoy camping at these primitive far away places, when allowed.

A2: I've never owned an appropriate vehicle to risk driving on a road that says "no road maintenance." I'd consider trying it in an appropriate rental vehicle. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS A2. "Maintenance" means different things to different people. Naturally, I have to check out current conditions, and go for it. #parkchat

A2. Had major concerns absorbing the cautions of driving to Toroweap in @GrandCanyonNPS. Mostly overdone but important to drive slow. Three hours of driving at 35 mph is not easy. Patience! But worth it, right? #ParkChat
