Unpaved Roads
ParkChat

Q4 #ParkChat Before traveling the unpaved roads at a Park (it’s considered backcountry travel), there are a number of precautions that the prudent explorer should take. What are the steps and precautions you make before hitting the unpaved road?

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4 Same I make before going on paved roads: make sure my wife knows where I'm going, checking in with the ranger in advance to know if there's any issue with where I'm going, and making sure I have the same supplies I'd have if I were backpacking. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4) I'd make sure that both the driver and the vehicle are properly suited for on the unpaved roads in the park or anywhere else. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4 A way to fix flats. Good spare. Food. Water. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4: Have a spare, maybe a plug kit as well. Some extra food and the usual supplies you’d take on a backcountry hike, just in case #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4 #ParkChat I check road conditions on their website or call a ranger. I try to keep a shovel in the car, as well as some extra safety gear beyond what’s in my pack.

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4: Proper vehicle maintenance, a full tank of gas, provisions to last longer than you intend to be gone. I always tell someone where I intend to be and for how long before I loose cell reception. I carry a first aide kit, a battery charger and have a full sized spare. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4. Before hitting the unpaved road, I check satellite maps, if I can. Then paper maps & pro GPS. I call the ranger or local authorities & tell them my plan. I bring first aid and recovery gear. Extra power, extra water, extra gas, extra food, backup communication. /1 #ParkChat

A4) Before hitting the unpaved road we check that we have lots of water and food (we carry a 5 gal bladder), plenty of gas, hopefully have cell service, a map, and a good sense of adventure coupled with reasonable caution. #parkchat #travel #adventure

A4 Uhh, make sure we have lots of gas? We're probably not as prepared as we should be most of the time #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks a4 - we typically have a tire repair kit, a portable compressor and of course a full size spare. Its the 2nd flat and god forbid the 3rd that wreaks havoc. #ParkChat

A4: I haven't done this yet, but expect #1 key is having a spare tire in case something happens. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @59NationalParks A4. Also a good rule of thumb is GOAL! Get Out And Look! Always! Do it twice! Walk and scout. Toss out your ego and GOAL. You can never be too careful! /2 #ParkChat

A4 Kick the tires, light the fires, pack a 12v-powered air pump, check the spare, buy a mouth guard, ratchet everything down. Ready, stead, go! #ParkChat

A4 Full tank of gas to make sure you have range to complete the trip (gas cans if necessary), food and water, shelter, shovel and tow strap. #parkchat

A4. Call the Ranger for road conditions. Search Instagram or AllTrails for recent conditions. As necessary, bring a shovel and air compressor for soft conditions (e.g., sand) #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4) I'll admit all I've usually brought is luck, although a pal wisely advised me to have certain things handy in my trunk on long road trips. My biggest concern is a way to communicate or navigate without a cell signal, which I need to be better about! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4: Have AAA. & massive $$$. Supplies for days to wait for said Triple A to locate you. Lol. Seriously tho, check weather & weather pattern leading to day of & also surrounding area. Don’t want to be stuck in mud or get swept by flood from rain miles away #parkchat

replying to @t_jh2009 @t_jh2009 @59NationalParks #ParkChat A4 read up on it! We took the short road to Zapata Falls near Great Sand Dunes and about ruined our Durango. You needed MORE than 4wd for that thing. We should have read up on it where people actually say, don't do it unless you have a jeep! 😁

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4) #ParkChat First Aid, extra snacks, let people know where you're going and when to expect you back, a spare, portable car jump, and WATER, a lighter, if it's cold - a coffee can heater https://t.co/Gglpw30Cwy (You never know!).
