Unpaved Roads

Q5. Do unpaved roads intimidate you? More so in our public lands? If so, why? If not, why? #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A5- we always make sure to fuel up! I've been a little too close for comfort with running on empty - I've learnt my lesson! #ParkChat

A5 Sometimes, but not usually. The really rocky/lumpy ones do. But I'm pretty much never the one driving. #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. Yes, in general. And they intimidate me more in our public lands for one simple reason: reduced cell phone coverage. I should probably carry a sat phone at all times #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. Somewhat, because my idea of car maintenance is bringing the car to the local dealer. I can change a flat and put on chains, but beyond that...not so much. We do prepare before any unpaved adventure, though. #ParkChat

A5 Unpaved roads don’t intimidate me unless they are super gnarly. I live at the end of a 3-mile dirt road; just have to be okay with the car always looking like this. #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5) Yes, sadly as with our problem of "deferred maintenance" probably means they are even less looked after. #ParkChat

A5 I don't know about intimidating, but I'm a lot more gung ho to try them in the NPs b/c I know there's a payoff #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5 Not really. We 4WD a lot. Never off road but on forest service roads, etc. Lots of fun. Have been on some pretty fun roads. #ParkChat

A5 I like to research roads ahead of time, so no. That said, if it was a spur of the moment decision, I would take it easy. It’s not the first flat that gets you. #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. I've been driving on dirt/rock/wet roads since I was a teen and I absolutely love them. And I respect them. I stay on marked trails and I observe the guidelines. I consider off road travel an opportunity to explore, rather than a sport of any kind! #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. It really depends. I'm used to them in ski areas, and feel more comfortable when in my Subaru. At other times, I'll take a look at the road and distance. The trails on either side of the Golden Spike NHS come to mind as a recent one where I paused but felt fine. #parkchat

A5 It's kind of encouraging knowing someone will come through there eventually 😁 so I'm not easily put off but lack of cell service is a little scary. We drive 21 miles of unpaved in Organ Pipe with no service. #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5) It kinda depends on what type of vehicle I driving but in general they don't. #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5 #ParkChat Unpaved roads have always been a fun adventure! It’s more fun since we got our Subaru Forester! It’s AWD with a FWD option to lock the wheels, plus it has a full spare. I’ve learned to really trust the tires and the computer and drive with a very loose grip.

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute #parkchat A5 not one bit. As long as the gas tank is full, the weather is good, and the survival gear bag is in the back, bring it on! 😁

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5: Igrew up on unpaved (and worse) roads...so no problem #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5) #Parkchat No, I love them, once was stuck down one leading to Zuckerberg's back yard on Kauai and since I was tail end in the Mud, I had to camp when no camping allowed, alone, under a beautiful full moon. I heard a strange noise try number 19 here https://t.co/BL6xqiRx0s

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. I grew up with and still live with unpaved roads. However, help is within walking distance, a mile or two. On public lands, the situation is different. I trust my driving skills, but there are things out of my control. So, a little intimidating. #parkchat
