replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @GreatSmokyNPS Is this in Cataloochee?! #ParkChat

Q4 #ParkChat Before traveling the unpaved roads at a Park (it’s considered backcountry travel), there are a number of precautions that the prudent explorer should take. What are the steps and precautions you make before hitting the unpaved road?

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @Stars252525 @Wild_Tribute Huh, would have been any of my trips there between 92 and 96. I don't remember anything over there at the time. Not even the moose they said were often seen there. #parkchat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @Stars252525 @tthrash @Wild_Tribute I must do this! #ParkChat

RT @beckyjlomax: @Stars252525 @tthrash @Wild_Tribute Here it is. Great dirt road drive to get to the bakery in the Merc. #ParkChat https://…

A2. Had major concerns absorbing the cautions of driving to Toroweap in @GrandCanyonNPS. Mostly overdone but important to drive slow. Three hours of driving at 35 mph is not easy. Patience! But worth it, right? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute Yeah I'll just join you there. I bring moonshine and cheesecake. #ParkChat

RT @59NationalParks: @Wild_Tribute A3 Probably happened on the unpaved portion on the @DenaliNPS road. Of course, I wasn’t driving. #ParkCh…

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3: Back country camping in @DeathValleyNPS! You don't need a permit as long as you travel certain roads and camp at least 8 miles from a paved road/developed area. We drove through soft sand and round huge boulders until we found the perfect site about 12 miles in. #ParkChat
A3- Titus Canyon Rd @DeathValleyNPS is another great high-clearance vehicle road. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute @DenaliNPS This photo is unreal! 👏👏 #ParkChat

A3 I'm going with the aforementioned Spiral Jetty road - I believe it's on BLM land, so that would make it "our public lands," right? #parkchat

A3: Sadly, I haven't driven on an unpaved road at a public land yet. So no memories to brag about, good or bad. #ParkChat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @Stars252525 @tthrash @Wild_Tribute OMG the cinnamon rolls they sell here are AMAZING! #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3 #ParkChat I got to be a passenger on an unpaved road in Los Padres NF with multiple stream crossings. The driver did a great job not getting us stuck!

replying to @BarnetteJason @BarnetteJason @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute Speaking of which, I tried your beer and Xmas cookie combination - it was really good! #parkchat

replying to @wxlada
@wxlada @Wild_Tribute The dirt in @TRooseveltNPS turns into nasty mud with any rain. that’s one you have to check conditions first.
#parkchat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @beckyjlomax @tthrash @Wild_Tribute The best. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4 Same I make before going on paved roads: make sure my wife knows where I'm going, checking in with the ranger in advance to know if there's any issue with where I'm going, and making sure I have the same supplies I'd have if I were backpacking. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4) I'd make sure that both the driver and the vehicle are properly suited for on the unpaved roads in the park or anywhere else. #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @Stars252525 @tthrash @Wild_Tribute Yes they are. And huckleberry bear claws, too, at the Polebridge Merc. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4 A way to fix flats. Good spare. Food. Water. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4: Have a spare, maybe a plug kit as well. Some extra food and the usual supplies you’d take on a backcountry hike, just in case #ParkChat

replying to @RedAroundWorld @RedAroundWorld @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute Absolutely! I have plenty of moonshine. Trust me haha. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4 #ParkChat I check road conditions on their website or call a ranger. I try to keep a shovel in the car, as well as some extra safety gear beyond what’s in my pack.

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3 - whenever I get to take my kids backcountry camping. They might mumble "are we there yet??" a few times along the way, but their immediate appreciation when we get to our site is unforgettable! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4: Proper vehicle maintenance, a full tank of gas, provisions to last longer than you intend to be gone. I always tell someone where I intend to be and for how long before I loose cell reception. I carry a first aide kit, a battery charger and have a full sized spare. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4. Before hitting the unpaved road, I check satellite maps, if I can. Then paper maps & pro GPS. I call the ranger or local authorities & tell them my plan. I bring first aid and recovery gear. Extra power, extra water, extra gas, extra food, backup communication. /1 #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS #parkchat A2 hey, that's our favorite backroad area, too! @windcavenps has some excellent roads off the beaten path! Also Sage Creek Rim Rd @badlandsnps is spectacular for wildlife.

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @Stars252525 @tthrash Yes! Such good memories! Northern Lights Saloon and the mercantile bakery make for an incredible experience #ParkChat

A4) Before hitting the unpaved road we check that we have lots of water and food (we carry a 5 gal bladder), plenty of gas, hopefully have cell service, a map, and a good sense of adventure coupled with reasonable caution. #parkchat #travel #adventure

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute @DenaliNPS Thanks. Just there on the right day. #ParkChat

A4 Uhh, make sure we have lots of gas? We're probably not as prepared as we should be most of the time #ParkChat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @59NationalParks @WindCaveNPS Hey - I've never done it, but I consider him a reliable report. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks a4 - we typically have a tire repair kit, a portable compressor and of course a full size spare. Its the 2nd flat and god forbid the 3rd that wreaks havoc. #ParkChat

A4: I haven't done this yet, but expect #1 key is having a spare tire in case something happens. #ParkChat

Q5. Do unpaved roads intimidate you? More so in our public lands? If so, why? If not, why? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @59NationalParks A4. Also a good rule of thumb is GOAL! Get Out And Look! Always! Do it twice! Walk and scout. Toss out your ego and GOAL. You can never be too careful! /2 #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3 #ParkChat Driving the “4 wheel drive” only backroads in #JoshuaTree #WhereGalsWander

A4 Kick the tires, light the fires, pack a 12v-powered air pump, check the spare, buy a mouth guard, ratchet everything down. Ready, stead, go! #ParkChat

A4 Full tank of gas to make sure you have range to complete the trip (gas cans if necessary), food and water, shelter, shovel and tow strap. #parkchat

A4. Call the Ranger for road conditions. Search Instagram or AllTrails for recent conditions. As necessary, bring a shovel and air compressor for soft conditions (e.g., sand) #ParkChat
