Unpaved Roads
ParkChat
replying to @DryTortugasFilm @DryTortugasFilm @coasthikergirl @Wild_Tribute I’ve been on that road! Tall waterfall nearby, right? #ParkChat
A6: Unfortunately I'm not well versed enough in unpaved roads in U.S. public lands to list any besides the one in Death Valley that leads to the sailing stones. #ParkChat
I wrote about our unpaved experience too: https://t.co/EUEm2qM98h #ParkChat https://t.co/2Rlw4ukKfl
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute #parkchat A5 not one bit. As long as the gas tank is full, the weather is good, and the survival gear bag is in the back, bring it on! 😁
replying to @naturetechfam @naturetechfam @t_jh2009 @59NationalParks Pretty rocky and bumpy. #ParkChat
A6. Notom Road is all I can think of. And The Maze in Canyonlands, but I haven't been in there yet. This summer, hopefully! #parkchat
replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove Death Valley is on my list for spring #ParkChat.
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A4) #ParkChat First Aid, extra snacks, let people know where you're going and when to expect you back, a spare, portable car jump, and WATER, a lighter, if it's cold - a coffee can heater https://t.co/Gglpw30Cwy (You never know!).
Sorry #ParkChat have to run! It’s time for dinner here. Looking forward to catching up later this evening and curious about the announcement too! Safe travels!
replying to @purpleosh @purpleosh @terragalleria Had a personal vehicle lottery ticket in Sept - couldnt pull the trigger to go. #parkchat😑
A3. Too many to compare, but I'll mention Capitol Reef National Park's Cathedral Valley because I didn't see anyone during an entire day although that's where the highlights of the park are, rather on than the short paved section (photo from Treasured Lands) #parkchat
RT @DryTortugasFilm: @59NationalParks A4) #ParkChat First Aid, extra snacks, let people know where you're going and when to expect you back…
Q7. Is there such thing as too few unpaved roads in our parks or forests? Or is there a healthy balance? Thoughts? #ParkChat
replying to @RedAroundWorld @RedAroundWorld @ParksandPoints @GreatSmokyNPS Yep. Five hours from me. Asheville is that one destination I have yet to spend more than a night or two. I really need to get there this year. #ParkChat
replying to @louisbink @louisbink @DryTortugasFilm @coasthikergirl @Wild_Tribute We walked to the green sand beach. Chicken. As I recall even the parking area was treacherous. #ParkChat
replying to @GalsWander @GalsWander I look forward to seeing how your experience is with the sailing stones. #ParkChat
RT @59NationalParks: Q6 #ParkChat Our best experience on an unpaved road at a Park was the Cascade River Road at @NCascadesNPS followed by…
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS A6. Pioneer road and the Salton. The Salton is a great and pretty way to shave time off a trip when heading from Sudbury Ontario to Thunderbay Ontario. A bit of a bumpy ride, but so long as you fuel up first it is a fun detour. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS A6) Joshua Tree has some nice unpaved and scenic paths #parkchat
replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS It was a no stress road really. Beautiful. #ParkChat
replying to @trentNsara @trentNsara @GreatSmokyNPS And the Cosby Campground is one of my favorites in the park. Usually kinda quiet and sparse there, even during peak seasons. #ParkChat
RT @Wild_Tribute: Q7. Is there such thing as too few unpaved roads in our parks or forests? Or is there a healthy balance? Thoughts? #ParkC…
replying to @naturetechfam @naturetechfam @t_jh2009 Glad we didn’t take it then. #ParkChat
replying to @purpleosh @purpleosh @hksbks @59NationalParks Same here. So much peace of mind. So worth it. And making decisions based on the weather feature is a major bonus! #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS A6. The Old Mojave Road that travels through Nevada and California is one of my favorite experiences on a dirt road! Also, the roads through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park that take you through the old gold and mail routes. & the Escalante Wilderness in CO! #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS #ParkChat A6 well you took my Sage Creek Rim Rd @badlandsnps, but love Old Fall River Rd @RockyNPS was awesome (pictured here). Third is one in @yellowstonenps that shall not be revealed. 😉
A6. part deux: Also recalling driving the unpaved Cassiar Highway to Alaska in the early 1990s in my Honda Civic hatchback with Mr. Adventure and our dog riding shotgun. That was memorable. #ParkChat
replying to @louisbink @louisbink @DryTortugasFilm @coasthikergirl Sounds intense #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks What can I say? Mr PLL got me a Wilderness First Aid class for Valentine's Day. And my dad raised me to adventure hard and safe. Also told me to buy the most expensive car battery and tires that I can afford. #ParkChat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A7. I'm all about unpaved roads in our parks. Pavement can be an eyesore in an otherwise pristine environment. #ParkChat
RT @WildWithinHer: I wrote about our unpaved experience too: https://t.co/EUEm2qM98h #ParkChat https://t.co/2Rlw4ukKfl
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A7 Not as many in the parks as in the forests, which I think is fine. People get lost or stranded on forest service roads all the time, and the same would happen in the parks. #ParkChat
A6 Hard to remember all of them, but top of my list of crazy but fun unpaved roads are several in The Maze of @CanyonlandsNPS. We had to have one person drive my Jeep while we walked in front guiding the driver. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS And it ends at arguably the most scenic trailhead in the national park system. #ParkChat
A7 There's gotta be a healthy balance between unpaved, primitive roads and paved, maintained roads on public lands. Not everyone has a four wheel drive. Some people prefer fuel efficient compact cars. Unpaved roads are usually inaccessible in the winter. #ParkChat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5: Igrew up on unpaved (and worse) roads...so no problem #ParkChat
replying to @coasthikergirl @coasthikergirl Thanks for stopping by Lisa. #ParkChat
RT @WildWithinHer: I wrote about our unpaved experience too: https://t.co/EUEm2qM98h #ParkChat https://t.co/2Rlw4ukKfl
replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS A6 #ParkChat #JoshuaTree has great roads but when they say 4 wheel drive recommended they are not kidding

Excellent! #ParkChat
replying to @terragalleria @terragalleria One of our favorite places in the National Park System we’ve experienced. Such a gem, couldn’t agree more QT #ParkChat
A8, A9. See my year 2018 in review. Ten locations, all on public lands (national parks or monuments): https://t.co/jkuKRzI5Fm #parkchat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute #parkchat A7 less is more. But if they are there already, leave em dirt!
replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS This almost looks packed enough to allow 2WD vehicles. #ParkChat
replying to @louisbink @louisbink @terragalleria Bummer! Cliche but. it’ll still be there next time! #parkchat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A7) I hope there's a healthy balance but after the various wildfires in California last year CalFire & other agencies could have used more access roads to fight them. #ParkChat
A7 There has to be a balance. Honestly, if the road presently exists, it should continue. For many western parks, a few more roads would be good. The rest? Not so much. #parkchat
