Unpaved Roads

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A8) Slow down when approaching other vehicles and when they're behind you to reduce the gravel & dirt being lifted into air to not only help with visibility but help avoid breaking a windshield. #ParkChat
A8 pt 2 Also, ALWAYS stop for any stopped vehicles to make sure they are ok. #parkchat
replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @59NationalParks Also, don’t try to push your own pace if someone is behind you. Let them pass if you are taking it slow. #ParkChat
A9 Burr Trail Switchbacks! Well, the Capitol Reef section of Burr Trail in General. The switchnacks actually scare me and the rest is just soooo washboardy #parkchat
replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute Dude. Awesome photos. Seriously awesome. #ParkChat
replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS The Geology Tour Road connects to a few canyon roads & eventually leads you to the 10 Fwy to get out of the park. Some trippy spots but fun. Kinda bummer tho is coming out to Indio on BLM land full of littered gun shell casings #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @ParksandPoints @BarnetteJason @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS Do rental companies in the mountain west really think people that rent jeeps are not going to take them off road? #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @ParksandPoints @BarnetteJason @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS You mean a question like, "How &%#^ing ridiculous is it that some rental car companies won't let you drive on unpaved roads?" #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @BarnetteJason @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS We've never had a problem, but then we also don't take them on the high clearance roads. #parkchat
replying to @BarnetteJason @BarnetteJason @Wild_Tribute Hey, thanks, Jason! 😁 #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @ParksandPoints @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS I'm not sure I would. Do their rental agreements actually allow you to drive unpaved roads? Have you ever had any road damage like pings from gravels? #ParkChat
replying to @akkingon @akkingon @Wild_Tribute And blazing the trail right? #ParkChat
replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @59NationalParks I didn’t know that. #ParkChat. Good to know
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A7) #Parkchat People are so irresponsible these days, it ruins it for the rest of us, the cost to maintain against what already needs fixing isn't realistic to have more.
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A3 - we enjoyed some time on the “highways” in Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge last Summer. No pics on my phone! Great place! #ParkChat
replying to @RedAroundWorld @RedAroundWorld It’s a bit of a tease, right? The Burr Trail is paved unexpectedly longer than one would think #ParkChat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A5. I grew up with and still live with unpaved roads. However, help is within walking distance, a mile or two. On public lands, the situation is different. I trust my driving skills, but there are things out of my control. So, a little intimidating. #parkchat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute #Parkchat. There are slot of paved roads I wish were not paved so to keep the crowds away
replying to @wander_filled @wander_filled Seems we have differing opinions here. @Stars252525 #ParkChat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute @59NationalParks @ParksandPoints @BarnetteJason @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS No - but if you are an infrequent renter at an off-airport / franchise location - have to be careful of the "gotcha" moment when returning the vehicle with scratches or window-chips. #parkchat
replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @wander_filled So true. And in a crazy twist, we have one unpaved road in Glacier that is “going back to nature” because the maintenance backlog prevents fixing it plus a re-evaluation of the impacts of the road on wildlife. #ParkChat
replying to @purpleosh @purpleosh @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS This reminds us of Alabama Hills outside Lone Pine. Def warrants a shout out this evening #ParkChat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A9. I would prefer that an overused road be made into a bike/hiking trail rather than paved - sorry :-( #ParkChat
RT @59NationalParks: Q2 #ParkChat Have you ever seen a Park road sign which states “No Road Maintenance” on an unpaved road? We try to take…
A9 Black Tail Plateau Drive in @YellowstoneNPS. It gets enough traffic to where it needs to be more than just a dirt road. #parkchat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A9) #Parkchat I can imagine there are some roads at @Volcanoes_NPS that need to be REpaved after last year.
Q10 #ParkChat Traveling on unpaved roads requires additional planning to avoid hardships and to assure fun will be had by all. Can you give us three planning tips you make that you use to assure success on an unpaved Park road trip?
A6 #parkchat Here's three with details: Medano Pass Road in Great Sand Dunes, https://t.co/HWce4DfkW3, Maze in Canyonlands https://t.co/9BliUb9y2S, Toroweap in Grand Canyon: https://t.co/XOL2PXKRwZ
A9: I wish the road to the sailing stones in Death Valley was paved because I'd be more confident in making a visit to that area. However, I know it would also probably lead to MUCH bigger crowds and decrease the enjoyment. #ParkChat
replying to @BarnetteJason @BarnetteJason @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS Amex Premium primary insurance ($19 for duration of rental) covers all conditions, though won't cover off road vehicles, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #parkchat
replying to @GalsWander @GalsWander @Stars252525 @59NationalParks Ruh-roh. We have conflicting information, #ParkChat. @Stars252525 says uphill vehicles have the right of way. @wander_filled says it's the downhill folks. I need clarity!
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A9. No! I wish more of them were unpaved! 😁 #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute @ParksandPoints @BarnetteJason @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS Think they know people will. Big companies protect themselves from foreseeable liability. I know. I’ve worked for big companies. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @wander_filled Person coming up has momentum. Least that's what we've been taught. But should always use common sense depending on the situation. #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS Oh yeah! Alabama Hills! Definitely. #parkchat
replying to @DryTortugasFilm @DryTortugasFilm @Volcanoes_NPS You’re not kidding. Can’t imagine the set back to the budget this year. Was in the news for so long and then abruptly disappeared from the spotlight #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute Yeah, what you said. Let's take care of what we have, and not over-build #parkchat
replying to @wander_filled It is easier to back up going downhill than uphill. Some hills require a “running start” to make sure you clear it. #parkchat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @ParksandPoints @BarnetteJason @NCascadesNPS @BadlandsNPS @BigCypressNPS Exact wording of tonight’s unused question. #InsideBaseball @Wild_Tribute we frequently write Qs we don’t use. Right? #ParkChat
replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A9) With my mobility issues theres a vast number of unpaved roads that I would like to see paved because physically I can't go on them if they're too long. Thus the short roads to trail heads & vista views would be my choice. #ParkChat
