Preparing for Park Travel
ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip A2. Since I live on the road, I usually choose to visit parks that happen to be along my route. I'll search maps & make detours to see a park I haven't been to before. I especially seek out #PublicLands with free camping, such as @BLMNational or @forestservice land. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2) We often think about the parks we haven't visited and want to, and plan from there! #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2: Sometimes it depends on where I can drive in a period of time. other times it depends on the cheapest flights to a major city. If I get a cheap flight, I rent a car and kinda wing it to whatever is open. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 Hubs asks me, what is the main park or 2 you want to visit? I tell him, and he gets to work. When I said Crater Lake, it turned into a 6 wk trip to the PNW. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2: is it close? How will I get there? How long do I have to visit? What season is it? Lots of variables go into a choice. #ParkChat

A2 Nowadays, I have to find parks that I can visit in only a six-day span, because that is generally the max length for my trips now #parkchat

A2. For the last several years, trips have been a few days before or after hubs' business trips. So, whichever parks are nearby! It's worked really well; we've seen a bunch of new-to-us parks. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip
@MattsRoadTrip A2: If the trip is not specifically to a park, I look to see which ones are near my main destination (and near could mean 2-3 hours...)

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. Often choosing is tied to some sports stadiums I want to see or, it's because I look at an area of a map and see a swath of land I haven't traveled to at all or in a while. Then I map out a route (maybe ballgame-schedule driven) that let's me see parks in the area. #parkchat

A2 I usually choose which #nationalpark to visit based on where my #roadtrip takes me. Lats year the #RoadtoTBEX took me to 6 NPS units. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2) If the park is in the region of the country I'm visiting that greatly helps narrow down the selection process, then if it's a park I haven't been to yet & interest me the search narrows down even more. #ParkChat

RT @BarnetteJason: A2 I usually choose which #nationalpark to visit based on where my #roadtrip takes me. Lats year the #RoadtoTBEX took me…

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. We usually start with one park in mind and see what’s nearby #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2) #Parkchat ALL of them! Hahaha, really though! So I can pick out the ones I'd like to explore more in depth later, plus it's our target audience because most people visiting a National Park would be interested in learning about the Dry Tortugas and seeing a film about it.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 #ParkChat The next one on the list! We’re sort of working out in larger and larger concentric circles. Need to venture into Idaho next. I’m also trying to collect Wilderness areas.

A2: In our travels, we hit every NP on our journey and the best state parks as well. I bought a NP book when in college and I began trying to visit everyone shortly there after...20 and counting...lots more to go #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2: My kids made a list so we are trying to work through it based on what works for our logistics and schedules. Nothing is close to us sadly, but we try get to a few every year. #parkchat #everybodysnationalparks

A2. Nothing like checking out a park’s best of the best views and day hikes to only go back at a later date and do the best Backcountry adventures within #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 We usually roadtrip with our dog, so dog-friendly parks are a must! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 My NP visits have been mostly half marathon related. I’m working my way thru @VacationRaces NP half marathon series 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️ Generaly fly I into a major city then drive to NP hitting whatever NPS sites I can work in on the way. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. I'll visit a park when I'm already in an area for another reason. Otherwise, it's a haphazard process. I like to visit areas new to me. I change my mind a lot, too, before the final decision. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. We usually have to strike a balance between getting to new Parks on my bucket list and returning to some family favorites. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 Depends. We went to Colorado in 2016 & decided to go to Mesa Verde while we were out there. For that trip, we made reservations once we knew we'd be in Colorado. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip #parkchat A2 if they are on the way or at destination (they usually ARE the destination) we see them. Even a brief visit is worth it, for a #juniorranger badge and learning about the park. Then we can decide whether to go back when we have more time on a future trip!

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. We like to do equal parts new parks and old favorites that have sentimental value on each trip. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2) For me parks call out, a few of them repeatedly, but others are just those yet to be checked off my list of intriguing places I've always wanted to explore. #ParkChat
