Preparing for Park Travel
ParkChat

Q3 - When you visit a park for several days, do you prefer to camp within the park, stay in a park lodge, or stay in local hotels? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip A3. I absolutely prefer to camp in my Airstream. I prefer backcountry campsites if they're available, or more primitive developed campgrounds. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3) For us, it's a mix of camping and hotel (lodges are lovely but tend to be expensive and not bookable on our hotel points.) We often move around the park, rather than saying in one place for multiple days. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 I usually stay in a local hotel, but would love to stay in a lodge if I had more dinero. :P #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 We stay in the lodges as much as we can. It's a huge expense, but we don't care. Love the lodges. The history, the atmosphere. Hotels along the way. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 #ParkChat Wilderness camp ideally. We’ll front-country camp though if it makes the most sense for the park. I always want to stay right in the park.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3: I prefer the backcountry if solo but if with family, I stay in a campground or hotel nearby #ParkChat

A3. Generally, tent camping is our thing. Most recently we were in @GrandCanyonNPS, enjoying clear skies and 22 degrees at night. #ParkChat

A3 Whenever I spend more than a few days in a #nationalpark I prefer to stay inside the park in a campground to be closer to everything I actually like. #ParkChat

A3 With the free tea and cookies at the Hotel Formerly Known as the Ahwahnee? Are you kidding? #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3: Depends on the weather - I don't enjoy camping when nights are very hot. If it's a weekend with flights & a rental car, I sleep in the car or get a cheep motel because I can't always take my camping stuff. Hotels are okay, if I have points to use. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 #parkchat Absolutely prefer to camp, since that offers me the cheapest way to experience the park (and therefore, the ability to experience more parks), but I'll also choose hotels if convenience or itinerary dictates it. I rarely stay in park lodges due to cost.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. I'm more of a nearby lodge or local hotel type--especially if there's an evening activity planned. Most recently, I enjoyed 2.5 days in Olympic last summer, and spent evening time in hotels on towns on the north and west side of the park. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3) A lot of the time it depends on how I'm traveling, if I'm leaving from home on a road trip I might camp but if I'm flying somewhere then going on a road trip I'll usually stay at a nearby hotel/motel. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. Combo of camp and Lodge. Lodge is obviously more expensive, but we love checking out the historic lodges in the parks. If Lodge is not available, we’ll usually do 1 or 2 nights in a cabin or cottage nearby. #parkchat #everybodysnationalparks

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. Depends on the park, but generally stay in a local hotel or cabin #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3) #Parkchat I prefer to get as much park experience as possible, so camp! I do love the Volcano House at @Volcanoes_NPS , totally worth every penny but they have great primitive campgrounds and even a campground across the street with facilities and you can rent tents too!
replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip a3 - Our new challenge is finding space big enough for 2 teenage boys - the puny hotel pull-out couch really isnt cutting it anymore for a 6'2 200 pd 18 year-old plus his "little" brother - lol #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. Camping is really the only way to make it work on a family budget for a multi-day trip to a single park - plus it puts you right on the Park! #ParkChat

A3: Camping the park is a must, we tow our home/RV so it is cheap to stay everywhere. Even at Disney it was a third of the cost of a hotel.#ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. We prefer around 2/3 camping and 1/3 lodging (park lodging if available and affordable). And we always start each trip with camping/backpacking to make a break from home life! #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3: Ooo! This is tough, as I’ve done all 3. It depends on location and availability. Many Glacier lodge sits in the perfect spot for the start of many hikes in @GlacierNPS, so it was ideal. Camping is great as long as there’s availability 👍 #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip #parkchat A3 yes. Haha. We try for camping first to save money in nearby #nationalforests, then cabins nearby (@KOAKampgrounds cabins are our favorite), rarely we splurge and stay in the park lodges or campsites. The camping in this @GrandTetonNPS photo was free!

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 We stayed in park lodge in Mesa Verde & Yellowstone. Camped at Grand Tetons. Stayed at hotel outside park at Rocky Mtn. Camped at Sleeping Bear. Runs gamut. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 If it is winter, I like to stay at a lodge or somewhere that has a great wintery view and has a great warm shower and maybe a fire place. Oh and comfy pillows and a big warm blanket to sleep under since I'm a bit chilled from being in winter. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 I generally stay at nearby hotels/lodges as I tend to visit during the shoulder season and prices are relatively reasonable. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. We've done all three, and they all have advantages disadvantages. We've made the mistake of staying too far from the park on a couple occasions and spent way too much time on the road driving back and forth every day! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3: We tent camp, preferably in the backcountry. Here's our site in @DeathValleyNPS last April. We were 11 miles from a paved road. #ParkChat
