Preparing for Park Travel

Q5 - What do you do for meal time? Do you cook your own food, bring prepared food or dine at restaurants or cafes? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5. Some of it is preplanned, but many times we ask a ranger/volunteer at the visitor center for recommendations. They’re the best resource! #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5: My son watches @RockThePark_ and other videos and then makes a list of what he wants to see and do. It always includes competing the jr ranger program and watching the park video. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5: pour boiling water in the bag...wait ten minutes and enjoy :-) #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5: If I leave from home, I have food packed for snacks/meals. If I fly in somewhere, I stop at a store and stock up. I like to have a meal a day out, at a lodge or local favorite. Prefer not to waste money as I go on snacks and overpriced gas station stuff. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip A5. I cook nearly all my own meals and buy food from restaurants a couple meals a week. I love cooking for myself and it's cheap but I also love sampling local cuisine! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5: I bring as much grub with me to limit expenses. Campfire cooked meals for the win! #ParkChat

A5 Trail food for breakfast, picnic-type stuff for lunch, fine dining with a local beer for dinner #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5 Breakfast at lodge. Bring along nuts, granola bars, apples etc for during the day. Night is usually back at the lodge or somewhere local. Depends on the park and where we are staying. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5. Dine at restaurants, cafes in or outside of the park. Scout for breweries in the area too. Also take advantage of free hotel breakfasts, and have snacks in the car. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5. We cook most of the time, preferring to spend money on local beer and wine instead of restaurant food. A personal favorite: PBJs and a bottle of wine after samples at a winery. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip #parkchat A5 we precook a lot of food then freeze it, that way mom enjoys the camping instead of spending time cooking and cleaning every day! 😉 But we also make use of our Dutch oven a lot! Mmmmm.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5) #Parkchat I've become accustomed to cooking over an open fire, weather permitting. I basically snack throughout the day and get 1 big meal either that I cooked (weather permitting) or at a local restaurant. I prefer to cook though.

A5. We almost always bring our own food. Trader Joe's is our go-to store for supplies. We did eat in the former Harvey House restaurant at the Grand Canyon as a treat. It was great fun. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5. We usually pack food for lunch to maximize time in the park (and save cost) and eat locally for dinner #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5 #parkchat Usually a combination, depending on trip circumstances. I tend to eat fewer meals and just snack more while traveling. During roadtrips, I always tend towards sampling a local craft brewery, but if we're camping in a park, then we're usually cooking at a campground.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5 #ParkChat We try to cook most of our meals because it’s the least expensive way to travel plus I’m vegetarian and not all corners of the country have restaurants with decent options.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5) If I'm going up to Yosemite for a day visit I'll stop & pick up a sandwich which I'll have half at Washburn Point & half at Valley View. Other times its it could be a one of the restaurant in the park. #ParkChat

A5. Freeze Dried Food. If you add a pack of ramen, often sufficient to share between two. Are we also the only ones who only eat fast food when on the road from adventure to adventure? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5. If we’re camping we try to cook our own as much as possible. Park restaurants seem to mostly be either nondescript food service or else pretty pricey. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5: usually a combination. We do love breakfast skillet camping food. It also depends if we are flying or driving. #parkchat

replying to @DryTortugasFilm @DryTortugasFilm @MattsRoadTrip A5 Depends. My propane camp stove seems to have died, so I'm not sure what we'll do in 2019 & beyond. Maybe the Coleman propane canister was empty when we bought it. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A5) All of the above depending on the circumstance, sometimes it comes down to sausages on the fire. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute A5. We carry convenient breakfast/lunch items-fruits, veg, summer sausage, drinks. Food is one reason to travel, there is one restaurant meal a day in the evening. Especially true if we are in an area with good regional fare. Pacific NW, seafood. Need I say more? #parkchat
