Preparing for Park Travel
ParkChat

#parkchat Twitter failed me on this one tonight. I blame the #shutdown! I’ll still browse through your posts but mine aren’t transmitting. Technology fail x3 today. Time for a beer! 🍻

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A8. Buy a map, download topos to my Gaia app, and study the route as much as possible! I only use guidebooks as much as necessary so some surprises remain. #ParkChat

replying to @kristarsha @kristarsha @MattsRoadTrip @VacationRaces Volunteer & get discount on next race. Are u veteran? Vets get discount too. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A8) #Parkchat Train beforehand, with all the gear we will actually take, making sure bags, shoes and clothing is all going to work out comfortably. Make a detailed schedule of where I'd like us to be and when and try to be flexible for dates depending on weather.
replying to @naturetechfam @naturetechfam @MattsRoadTrip @YellowstoneNPS @super8 Tell him he needs more grounds tho - I would never be able to push mine down with just my thumb! 😂😂 #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A7 I also love ranger walk and talks. #ParkChat

replying to @rscottjones @rscottjones @mjn126 @MattsRoadTrip Packed it in warm and then drank it frosty! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A7. Yes, yes, and maybe. I usually don't do guided hikes, unless I'm far away from home in a landscape I'd like to learn more about quickly, and the ranger likes to talk. #parkchat

RT @MattsRoadTrip: Q9 - How do you plan your route for a scenic drive through a park? #ParkChat https://t.co/73MEcNVCg5

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute I try and at least create general plans in advance, to at least get some idea of what to do somewhere. But I’ve tried to incorporate more flexibility as I’ve taken more control of planning. Biting the bullet on actually executing dreams tends to be the challenge. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A9: Take the obvious route, ask friends who have visited what their highlights would be, and go from there. I love to find a few off-the-beaten path items that fewer people visit just to see a new angle. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip Nothing worse than unexpected construction, esp if time is limited #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer As you know, Fred Harvey also ran the food & drink services on Santa Fe trains, including the Super Chief, considered the best ever train in the U.S. Take a look at its dinner menu: https://t.co/dOxbkxdc6s #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A9 Look at our resource books and the park websites! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A9) #Parkchat With the way the light is for best photo ops, starting before sunrise.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip We rely on guidebooks and the folks on #ParkChat. They are a great resource.

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr Oh, that sounds fantastic. We saw a terrific night sky program at Death Valley. #ParkChat

replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @MattsRoadTrip Oooh, Capitol Reef just moved up on my list of parks to see. #parkchat

A9 Either start at the end that has the best visitor center (so @GreatSmokyNPS is best entered from the west) or that creates the most dramatic buildup (so @SequoiaKingsNPS is best entered from the south) #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A9. It depends on where I'm coming from, and where I'm heading to next, if I can avoid driving the same route twice, etc. Several factors always seem to come into play. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip A9. I like to talk to the people at the visitor's center and find out how best to beat crowds at popular spots and which direction is best to take a drive in. Also, if there are any can't miss spurs or side trips! #ParkChat https://t.co/e98zcu8G2B

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A9. Just follow the advice given to us by the friendly ranger/volunteer at the visitor center #ParkChat

replying to @e_terren @e_terren @ParksandPoints @MattsRoadTrip It's a lovely park. #ParkChat

replying to @DonNadeau @DonNadeau @WildWithinHer I’ll have the grilled sirloin for $2.75 please. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @publiclandlvr Great Basin hands down has the most superb night sky program we’ve experienced #ParkChat

replying to @e_terren @e_terren @ParksandPoints @MattsRoadTrip Put it to the top. Smack dab in the middle of other amazing places to boot #ParkChat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @MattsRoadTrip Well, that picture was probably taken around 45-50° @ lowest or so at JOTR. As someone who lived in Vermont, I probably have a different definition of “freezing.” Also have a true zero degree sleeping bag and dress appropriately - makes the biggest a difference. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip
@MattsRoadTrip A9 #parkchat I drive blindfolded and let the ghost of Thomas Chalmers Vint guide me. (as well as the screams from other park motorists).
Gotta run parkchatters, but glad I could participate for a few questions!

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A9) That's usually the case, during my recent visit to Joshua Tree National Park I decided to drive routes and see places I hadn't seen the year before. #ParkChat

RT @MattsRoadTrip: Q8 - How do you prepare for a multi-day hike in our parks? #ParkChat https://t.co/QIr7RWauYG

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute @WildWithinHer @publiclandlvr It's such an amazing park! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @NatlParkService @VisitGJ @SouthernerSays @wanderingfam @publiclandlvr @TimSamsTravelUS @LiveaMemory @TouringTastebud @BarnetteJason @KaraDiDomizio @RoadtripC @monstervoyage I could drive thru there regularly. #parkchat

replying to @GPJohnston @GPJohnston @WildWithinHer We can hardly wait to go back! I highly recommend a multi-day visit. There is a National Wildlife Refuge nearby as well. #parkchat

replying to @just2moremiles @just2moremiles Ah yes. The Thriftway there is pretty good but that's about it. Of course, there's also Three Rivers for a burger and shake! #ParkChat

Q10 - What is your number one tip for anyone preparing to visit our parks or public lands? #ParkChat

A9) Downloading the official NPS map can be really helpful in planning and depending on the park, the website could have good pre-planed drives. We often get advice from Twitter, too! #ParkChat #travel

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip #parkchat Don't. Trust. Google. Maps. Talk to the Rangers about time and distance, or locals, or other Parkchat folks! Start really early to avoid the crowds. Make time for stopping at most of the pullouts!

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @GreatSmokyNPS @SequoiaKingsNPS Similar to Zion. Absolutely must experience the drive from the East entrance. No grander entrance to a park in the NPS in our opinion #ParkChat
