Preparing for Park Travel
ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 We usually roadtrip with our dog, so dog-friendly parks are a must! #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 I usually stay in a local hotel, but would love to stay in a lodge if I had more dinero. :P #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 We stay in the lodges as much as we can. It's a huge expense, but we don't care. Love the lodges. The history, the atmosphere. Hotels along the way. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 #ParkChat Wilderness camp ideally. We’ll front-country camp though if it makes the most sense for the park. I always want to stay right in the park.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3: I prefer the backcountry if solo but if with family, I stay in a campground or hotel nearby #ParkChat

replying to @EPCOTExplorer @EPCOTExplorer @Wild_Tribute Worked out though, right? #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @unconpeace And unfortunate because it doesn’t have to be that way with different management choices. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip
@MattsRoadTrip @Wild_Tribute Usually based on my desire to see a new part of the country or something specific. Then, I fill in the blanks. I wanted to see Olympic in 2017… that got me to Rainier and Crater Lake, too!

A3. Generally, tent camping is our thing. Most recently we were in @GrandCanyonNPS, enjoying clear skies and 22 degrees at night. #ParkChat

A3 Whenever I spend more than a few days in a #nationalpark I prefer to stay inside the park in a campground to be closer to everything I actually like. #ParkChat

A3 With the free tea and cookies at the Hotel Formerly Known as the Ahwahnee? Are you kidding? #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 My NP visits have been mostly half marathon related. I’m working my way thru @VacationRaces NP half marathon series 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️ Generaly fly I into a major city then drive to NP hitting whatever NPS sites I can work in on the way. #ParkChat

RT @59NationalParks: The closure of @JoshuaTreeNPS was the right decision. #ParkChat https://t.co/fVfI1ZOipw

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3: Depends on the weather - I don't enjoy camping when nights are very hot. If it's a weekend with flights & a rental car, I sleep in the car or get a cheep motel because I can't always take my camping stuff. Hotels are okay, if I have points to use. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute Before I get to a park, I download and read species lists from here: https://t.co/4f50wfVFsU This gives me a better idea about what plants and animals I might encounter and which ones to search for beyond the charismatic wildlife. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3 #parkchat Absolutely prefer to camp, since that offers me the cheapest way to experience the park (and therefore, the ability to experience more parks), but I'll also choose hotels if convenience or itinerary dictates it. I rarely stay in park lodges due to cost.

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. I'm more of a nearby lodge or local hotel type--especially if there's an evening activity planned. Most recently, I enjoyed 2.5 days in Olympic last summer, and spent evening time in hotels on towns on the north and west side of the park. #parkchat

replying to @BarnetteJason @BarnetteJason @OutdoorAdv360 Big fan of the big ole RV here. Dogs too. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. I'll visit a park when I'm already in an area for another reason. Otherwise, it's a haphazard process. I like to visit areas new to me. I change my mind a lot, too, before the final decision. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. We usually have to strike a balance between getting to new Parks on my bucket list and returning to some family favorites. #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2 Depends. We went to Colorado in 2016 & decided to go to Mesa Verde while we were out there. For that trip, we made reservations once we knew we'd be in Colorado. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip #parkchat A2 if they are on the way or at destination (they usually ARE the destination) we see them. Even a brief visit is worth it, for a #juniorranger badge and learning about the park. Then we can decide whether to go back when we have more time on a future trip!

RT @iStefPayne: @MattsRoadTrip Q2—I categorize. Whether I want to paddle, photograph, camp, climb a mountain, or just wander in a really pe…

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr Yes! We explored so many #NewMexico sites this way. And Mojave National Preserve, @DeathValleyNPS. #parkchat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3) A lot of the time it depends on how I'm traveling, if I'm leaving from home on a road trip I might camp but if I'm flying somewhere then going on a road trip I'll usually stay at a nearby hotel/motel. #ParkChat

RT @WildWithinHer: A3. Generally, tent camping is our thing. Most recently we were in @GrandCanyonNPS, enjoying clear skies and 22 degrees…

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip How long does it take you to set up camp with that monster airstream? #ParkChat

replying to @Parkasaur @Parkasaur @MattsRoadTrip That's our struggle too! 😁 #parkchat #thestruggleisreal

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. Combo of camp and Lodge. Lodge is obviously more expensive, but we love checking out the historic lodges in the parks. If Lodge is not available, we’ll usually do 1 or 2 nights in a cabin or cottage nearby. #parkchat #everybodysnationalparks

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @OutdoorAdv360 Didn't you just buy a big ole cabin with the fastest internet in the country? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2. We like to do equal parts new parks and old favorites that have sentimental value on each trip. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @BarnetteJason @OutdoorAdv360 RVlife is the best! #ParkChat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @MattsRoadTrip I love grabbing a drink or dinner in the lodges, even if I'm not staying in them. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute Unbelievably so. Very thankful. Very pissed the government is still closed, though. #FindYourPark #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3. Depends on the park, but generally stay in a local hotel or cabin #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A3) #Parkchat I prefer to get as much park experience as possible, so camp! I do love the Volcano House at @Volcanoes_NPS , totally worth every penny but they have great primitive campgrounds and even a campground across the street with facilities and you can rent tents too!

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip @59NationalParks @OutdoorAdv360 Nope. #VanLife beats 'em all. #ParkChat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @unconpeace I always cringe when I hear that - since many families simply can’t make commitments that far in advance until they have the schedules for their kids’ activities and work assignments are in place. #ParkChat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @MattsRoadTrip Did you know Indian Lodge at Fort Davis SP has reopened? #ParkChat

replying to @MattsRoadTrip @MattsRoadTrip A2) For me parks call out, a few of them repeatedly, but others are just those yet to be checked off my list of intriguing places I've always wanted to explore. #ParkChat

replying to @rscottjones @rscottjones @Stars252525 @MattsRoadTrip Ditto, if time allows #ParkChat
