Public Lands and the Government Shutdown
ParkChat

Q1 #ParkChat Have you been directly impacted by the #governmentshutdown or do you know some one that has? One of our sons has- he’s working but not being paid. Have you or someone you know changed their travel plans due to the #shutdown @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute

A1: We had to cancel our holiday #publiclands roadtrip to Arizona as soon as the shutdown began as Mr PLL was required to return to work immediately. He has been working without pay since then. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) Yes, as a National Park Service Volunteer at John Muir National Historic Site I haven't been able to report for duty since the shutdown began. #ParkChat

A1 Not this one - my dad worked at the VA, so he stayed home in the #GovernmentShutdown of the 90s, but he's retired now #parkchat

A1: a former student of mine is TSA....a young man driving 60 miles each way to work for free...two kids and a wife...not going well #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1. Yes. DANG IT. My annual trip to Organ Pipe was impacted and now I’m worried about my scheduled trip with my two boys to Joshua Tree will be fouled up. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) We had to cut out our extended adventure in Desert Wildlife National Refuge in #Nevada last weekend due to safety concerns with no one on duty. #travel #parkchat

A1. Had to cancel a trip to Joshua Tree due to the shutdown. And let me say, I'm so sad for all the park employees out of work. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1. I am among the 800,000 furloughed Federal employees without pay. I've been checking in with my furloughed co-workers to keep their spirits up, but its been hard on all of us. Not just the missed pay, but also knowing that our mission is idle while we are all away. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1. In weighing the pros and cons of an upcoming trip at the end of the month, the possibility of the continuing #shutdown ultimately tilted the scale against me going. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) I have been fortunate and have not been impacted by the shutdown personally, but know of a few people dealing with the issue. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) This is our first #governmentshutdown where we haven't been directly impacted. Hubs changed jobs and they are funded. It's such a stressful time. You worry about food, money, rent, etc. It's heartbreaking. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1. I have chosen to stay out of Federal lands until the shutdown ends. I'm using county and state camoing facilities instead. Also, my son is flying this week. I'd prefer the people looking out for his safety were being paid for their work. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1: The only impact to me is the inability to visit sites I want to travel to. Wanted to visit Waco Mammoth. Even if open I won’t visit a NPS until shutdown ends #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1 I actually do not know anybody personally, just on twitter, but I feel so bad for all workers affected by it. #ParkChat

A1: I haven't been impacted by the government shutdown nor have I had to change travel plans. I don't know anybody personally affected, but I know some #travelbloggers like @SSCampers have had to adjust plans because of it. #ParkChat

A1 We're fulltime RV travelers, and we stay 95% in federal parks, so it does have us staying in one place at the moment, though some federal campgrounds (Army Corps of Engineers) are open. But it's not a bother compared to what federal employees are going through #ParkChat https://t.co/yrJoTiN8PA

A1. Not directly impacted--yet--although my choices about where to hike do not include federal public lands right now. I know a few folks who've altered travel plans because of the #shutdown. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1. One friend had to cancel a planned trip to @TimucuanNPS and a brand new female troop in Scouts BSA is not able to visit the @belmontpaulnps as they had planned to kick off their scouting journey. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1: Have a lot of friends in DC that aren't working at present. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1. For this shutdown I was working as a contractor at a park, but since we’re closed to make ends meet I luckily had a previous part time job to fall back on to help for now #ParkChat

A1 We originally planned to visit several NPS sites in southern @NewMexico over winter break. We realized most of the sites would be closed, so went to the #BlackHills instead.
I know several folks who have been furloughed. #parkchat #govermentshutdown

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1 My personal travel plans have not [yet] been affected, and I don't personally know people affected by this situation, but I do feel we are all deeply affected by what's happening due to the #GovernmentShutdown. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1 I definitely have friends who are being affected - I'm not sure if my summer job will be affected - though I'm not working now it's possible the shutdown will delay the start of the season. #ParkChat

A1. The process of planning for trips in 2019 has certainly been impacted. https://t.co/7iW3BtPRmr’s gaps coupled with no access to Park Rangers in the visitor centers have made planning a challenge #ParkChat

Q1: #ParkChat Have you been directly impacted by the #governmentshutdown or do you know some one that has?
A1: We know of volunteers, participants, followers, friends and community partners who have been impacted by the current shutdown. #NuestrosNationalParks

A1: I have not been directly affected by it, but my aunt has as a TSA employee. I also don't know of anyone that has changed their travel plans due to the shutdown. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) #Parkchat #GovernmentShutdown has effected several Park Rangers I know and they are cutting it close with expenses. It personally effects my mental health, increased anxiety, worried about our #publiclands, the workers who care for these special places and the damages.

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) Many friends and family impacted. We almost cancelled our trip, but were told to come-the concessionaire at Everglades still running tours and maintaining campgrounds and Biscayne National Park Institute still running their tours and managing maintenance for now. #Parkchat

A1. The #governmentshutdown hasn’t personally affected my plans because I’ve been in India since it began. But I can’t imagine how mad I’d be if I had flown all the way here, paid for a visa, and their parks and sites were closed. I’d be fuming! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1: Yeah, a road trip down to Yosemite was on the table for New Year's, but a combination of the shutdown, bad weather, and getting sick made it unfeasible. #ParkChat

I feel this way as well, and I've been an official NPS volunteer for a while now. #ParkChat https://t.co/jNbTCs9Aa1
