Public Lands and the Government Shutdown
ParkChat

A2. It's a tough question, because concessioners also employ people who need their jobs. But they can't protect the parks like rangers and staff can, so everything should be shut down. And violators prosecuted. #ParkChat #Shutdown

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2: I'm a supporter of shutting them down. Not everyone is capable of safely and respectfully using the sites in accordance with laws and regulations. #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2 IMHO, the sites should all be closed to protect everything. Wildlife, people, natural resources, historical sites and features, everything. #ParkChat

replying to @Parkasaur @Parkasaur @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute @TimucuanNPS @belmontpaulnps Unfortunate for sure. #ParkChat

A2. Tough one. I think we only need to look to Joshua Tree for the answer here. #ParkChat

A2: the parks should be closed. It’s like a teenager throwing a rager when parents are out of town—people can get hurt, the house might get destroyed, and the aftermath is something that no party wants to deal with. #parkchat

A2: Yes, all units should be shuttered until the shutdown ends. And the reason is that the small minority of those that behave as if mom and dad are away and it’s kegger time will have too much of a negative impact that will take years to overcome #ParkChat https://t.co/gcgbLFTqSe

I am concerned about losing #publiclands stewards altogether, both perm and seasonal staff. #ParkChat https://t.co/ZyD4D7XNqM

A2. Without protection and oversight by the park service and our amazing park rangers, I believe they should be closed to protect the parks. #parkchat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2. I think, where it's possible, they should be closed until the shutdown has ended. They need to be protected and it has already been proven that bad behavior can have devastating consequences for our parks. #ParkChat

replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute Thank you for your support! This shutdown will ultimately only end if the players involved sense a change in public opinion, so those kinds of steps are really important. #ParkChat

@publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2. Yes, close them.
1. It will help protect the parks, and potential visitors.
2. The impact of a shutdown should be shared.

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2 All federal #publiclands should have been closed the moment the shutdown began. Evidence as to why they be closed is plastered all over the national media as their condition degrades without the necessary care and oversight that federal agencies provide. #ParkChat

A2: Given the trash and poor treatment of U.S. public lands during the shutdown, I think they should ALL be closed. If visitors are unable to "leave no trace" during the shutdown they don't deserve to visit these places. #ParkChat

Q3: From backcountry permits to campground reservations, some outdoor adventure planning is on hold right now. What are you doing in the meantime to make sure you can still #optoutside this year? #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr And morale is already down, with so many positions unfilled throughout @Interior and other agencies. It's continuing to take a huge toll on public service. #ParkChat

A2 Tough question. I lean towards shutting all of the NPS sites which do not have concessioners active at this time. While the parks belong to us all, folks have shown, especially in CA, that you can’t trust folks if the rangers aren’t there. #parkchat #govermentshutdown

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2 Feels like the parks should be shut down right now. They are enduring too much damage, and it doesn't seem safe for visitors. Need to assess damage and clean things up. #parkchat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2) An impromptu shooting range we witnessed at might be Tule Springs Fossil Beds NM (boundaries of the park are uncertain) was troubling. #parkchat

replying to @RCGibby73 @RCGibby73 You and @iStefPayne are together on this analogy! #ParkChat

A2. If the government can keep public airspace open safely during a shutdown, then the government can safely keep publiclands open safely during a shutdown. Public lands should be just as important as our airspace, and held to the same standard. #ParkChat https://t.co/v9L36Q7gfl

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2) I'd like to see as many of the Parks/Public Lands as possible be closed during the shutdown for various reasons such as safety & security. Sadly not all areas can be completely closed since some roads provide local access. #ParkChat
