Public Lands and the Government Shutdown
ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2) I'm in favor of shutting them down unless there are staff there to monitor our resource protection. We've obviously discovered that the public cannot be responsible without supervision. #parkchat

RT @t_jh2009: @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2) I'd like to see as many of the Parks/Public Lands as possible be closed du…

replying to @iStefPayne @iStefPayne I favor the Parks and public lands closing until this is resolved too. #ParkChat

Not all. If the parks are not threatened by people, and people are not threatened by the park? Leave them open. Let people see #ourpubliclands and enjoy them.
...and this shouldn’t even be an issue. The government should be open. The parks should be open. #FindYourPark #ParkChat https://t.co/DxGYvgEF31

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3: Welp, in Texas we don't have a *ton* of federal land anyway, so I'm continuing my journey to local and state parks. State parks are gems. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @publiclandlvr @Interior Morale — that’s a huge thing. The parks are meant to lift us up. Now they are casualty too in this crazy experiment. #parkchat

A3: We're planning as if we are going to be visiting a lot of National Parks in the coming months. Hopefully that isn't a mistake, but we adapt quickly. #ParkChat #GovernmentShutdown https://t.co/ctbuQjNh6k

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @HubbardJeff @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute Sadly - there are few signs of a resolution occurring soon. A bipartisan attempt today to get 20 Senators from each party to call for a three week "truce" on the shutdown floundered without getting Republican support. #ParkChat

A3. We’ve had luck speaking to concessionaires within or just outside the park to aid in planning. Otherwise, just crossing fingers the madness ends soon. #ParkChat

A3: I run on a nearly daily basis, but living in Japan my interaction with U.S. public lands is VERY different. #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3) Planning our grand summer adventure! @BlackCanyonNPS anyone? Or maybe @GulfIslandsNPS? Decisions, decisions . . . #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP I’m starting to look at late summer plans. Nothing concrete yet. Still coming off of Utah and Colorado. :) #ParkChat #FindYourPark

replying to @mjn126 @mjn126 @ChacoCultureNHP I agree! Is there a state park in TX that you recommend to all of us? #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2. I bow to the expertise here, where it seems clear that most everyone feels they should be shut down. Even trying to play devil's advocate, I cannot come up with a good counter to keep them open. #parkchat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3 We can head up to Caprock Canyons SP for a touch of wildness. That's the closest state park to me (and is my dearly beloved park anyway) #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3: Stay local and plan on visiting State Parks. #ParkChat

replying to @RCGibby73 @RCGibby73 Only takes a few to do a lot of damage. I believe most folks going to the Parks are involved in destructive behavior. #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr A3. For us it’s more difficult to plan as we may need to use the trip savings for every day life if the shutdown continues #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute A1) Many friends and family impacted. We almost cancelled our trip, but were told to come-the concessionaire at Everglades still running tours and maintaining campgrounds and Biscayne National Park Institute still running their tours and managing maintenance for now. #Parkchat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3) Actually the cold & rainy weather has kept me inside & avoiding driving on the roads with inexpensive drivers. #ParkChat

replying to @louisbink @louisbink @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS Well said Dr. Jarvis...#ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3 I've been spending a lot of time at local/state parks. #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP Well, I have my local favorite @DinoValleySP ...fun for kids because they can see dinosaur tracks when the river is low, fun for everyone because it has several hiking trails and plenty of camping. Just a neat little park. #ParkChat

replying to @louisbink @louisbink @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS So true. #ParkChat

replying to @theRangerLife @theRangerLife Yes. That's how we're managing right now. We took our money from our trip to AZ and paid bills. #ParkChat

A2. IMO, there are a few that could be kept open, e.g., the Lincoln & World War II memorials. Presume clear views & security cameras will protect. #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3. I'm looking at traveling to areas with significant state lands. None of my plans are firm at this point. #parkchat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP I'd say this is a Texas Gem for SURE. I'd highly recommend this one too. #ParkChat (and Palo Duro Canyon SP too)

replying to @Parkasaur @Parkasaur @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute Exactly. If you were thinking about a Federal Government career how do you feel now? #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2 #ParkChat I'd like to see the parks shutdown while rangers not being paid and cleaning staff not being paid. Safety, education, and sanitation

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS A2: Many folks, like our friends at @modernhiker, agree with us that we should not be going to #NuestrosNationalParks if they can. With so many options including state and local parks, it's best to find an alternative. If you do happen to go, remember to #LeaveNoTrace! #ParkChat

A3 We made excellent use of @CusterStatePark while in the #BlackHills. There’s a lot of outside left to see. #parkchat #govermentshutdown

A2 (cont) - The rules for a shutdown say that all personnel "essential to protect public safety and property" should not be furloughed. If that rule is not being followed - we should be pushing for personnel to be recalled from furlough, and not shutting down parks. #ParkChat https://t.co/v9L36Q7gfl

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute @louisbink @NatlParkService @PetroglyphNPS I do miss @JonsMoustache. I keep saying it because it's true. #ParkChat

replying to @fullvanfun @fullvanfun @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP @BlackCanyonNPS @GulfIslandsNPS Lots you can combine with Black Canyon. But then there’s the beach. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks @publiclandlvr @Wild_Tribute Changed my travel plans drastically back in Dec. Planned a trip to several parks that ended up closed. Diverted to Utah on a whim during my layover in ATL to Utah, where the parks were kept open by the local governments and trusts.
Best move I ever made. #FindYourPark #ParkChat

replying to @RCGibby73 @RCGibby73 @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP I need to get back to the park I associate with you. Tyler State Park. #ParkChat

A3. We're heading to state parks; in fact, we're considering a @rscottjones style quest to visit all of Washington's state parks! #ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP A3. State parks in California and Arizona is the alternate plan. I’m still planning trips to federal lands for the year - luckily also baseball will still be played #ParkChat

A3) We're making more plans and backup plans for state and local parks, throughout 2019 and 2020. #parkchat

replying to @NakMakFeegle @NakMakFeegle @publiclandlvr @ChacoCultureNHP Me too! Thankful they are open. Hit up @USFWSRMA_Alert just the other day. Amazing! #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute Instead of shutting down @JoshuaTreeNPS we should be recalling from furlough the personnel to keep it safe. #ParkChat

replying to @EPCOTExplorer @EPCOTExplorer @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute Your photos of that trip are epic! Glad you were able to be flexible and still have a great time. #ParkChat

Q4: Many @twitter handles have been proactive in promoting recreation alternatives to federal #publiclands. @visitrainier is one example. Have you seen others? Share them with us! #ParkChat
