Deserts

Q5 #ParkChat We read about the recent devastation at our Desert Parks, especially @JoshuaTreeNPS It turns out that deserts are particularly fragile environments. What extra steps can we take to protect them?
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5 #ParkChat Keep your steps on the trail. Desert plant life has a hard enough time without being stepped on.
A5. Protect more desert land. Yes, I know funding is scarce, but let's set aside as much as we can while we still have it. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5 Stay on the trails, people! Fragile soil. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5) Take to heart what the rangers say and stay on the path. Capitol Reef NP lets you know that if you wander even a foot off the path you can damage decades of growth. #parkchat
A5 Desert soils are super fragile with cryptobiotic crusts. That means we really have to watch our footsteps to avoid crushing these living soils that take forever to regrow. #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5) I would hope that further education would help but I'm afraid that would not be enough. Perhaps closing off areas to only those with permits would help reduce the damage & vandalism. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5: Stay on marked trails and Paths. You’re not making the next hit rock video out there. #ParkChat
A5: These "ice" formations are actually salt crystals from evaporated water at the Great Salt Lake. Fragile to the touch and at the mercy of the rising water. #parkchat @UtahStateParks @UtahDWR @GreatSaltLakeSP

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5. Quit paving and over-commercializing them. #ParkChat

@59NationalParks @JoshuaTreeNPS A5. Stay on the trail & LNT. #ParkChat
Another thought, remove federal ownership & return them to States that can afford to staff Rangers to avoid federal red tape & shutdowns.
