replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A9 On Day 1 of a 10-day backpack trip in the Grand Canyon, we left in the morning from the South Rim at 20 degrees with frozen water bottles, but that night we sweltered at Phantom Ranch at 105 degrees. An 85-degree swing in one day. #parkchat

A8: @GreatBasinNPS was a huge surprise as we drove across the barren desert. The climb from the gates to the highest peak is a study in changing landscapes. #parkchat

Q10. If you had to embark on the “Tour de Desert” Parks within (of outside of the NPS), what would your itinerary consist of? #ParkChat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @59NationalParks Of the times I've backpacked in Aravaipa Canyon in Arizona, I think I've seen a gila monster on all but one trip. Have always seen desert bighorn sheep there. Worth a visit if you find yourself out this way. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A9) I always go when weather is least threatening, usually spring, but one time while hiking out of a canyon in Grand Gulch Primitive Area in Utah we were overtaken by a fast-moving rainstorm. We ducked into the overhang of a giant boulder and waited it out. #Parkchat

replying to @RCGibby73 @RCGibby73 @59NationalParks A9. As a kid, my 1st visit to @PetrifiedNPS was in a snowstorm. It was my first trip west of the Mississippi, and my parents knew they had a paleontology-obsessed kid, so they made sure to take me, even though the weather limited us to a few mad dashes out of the car! #ParkChat

replying to @just2moremiles @just2moremiles @e_terren @Wild_Tribute TBH, it's mostly the opposite. Way *too* much is allowed there, which speaks to its history as the "unclaimed" public lands from the Louisiana Purchase. That's why it's been a critical task to help create an ethic of conservation within the agency. #parkchat

A4. The Mojave River in California's high desert. It runs just below ground much of the time, but you can track it by its cottonwoods. In Hesperia & Victorville area it runs above ground. In one big storm in the 1930 its flow almost reached Death Valley. #ParkChat
