Q6 #ParkChat Many people, including me, have a fear of heights. What strategies do you use in the mountains to cope with steep drop offs? Have you ever been deterred from hiking a mountain trail or driving a mountain road due to your fear of heights?

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6: Yeah I’ve been turned to a stone due to heights a few times. Couldn’t make it over Trail Ridge Road. On hikes now I just take my time and get used to the surroundings and relax before proceeding #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6 Yes I do. I have plastered myself against a rock or two at the Grand Canyon until I can get my courage up to keep going. I shut my eyes at key points when driving. (really, hubs drives and I ride along) #ParkChat

A6 My therapist cured my fear of heights by pushing me out of a plane #notreally #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks #parkchat A6 no fear here. But the rest of NTF. haha. Here was a small climb up Notch Trail @badlandsnps and I had to carry our little man down, monkey style! I scrambled up and down, much to their dismay. 😆

A6 Actually, I remember being nervous on the way up Angels Landing @ZionNPS, but I practically hopscotched my way down #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A6. I'm usually ok with driving. At least, I haven't yet been deterred from a road. It's much easier to be the driver rather than passenger. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6: I had a nasty fear of heights when I was younger. But I also have a stubborn, adventurous streak. As long as I have sure footing and stay mindful of exactly where I am, I'll be fine. Example: I had to stand on the edge of a cliff to get this! https://t.co/KATu68uR88 #ParkChat

A6 We decided not to tow our camper over the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado, opting not to chance that pass with a camper in tow.

Bonnie is afraid of heights and the idea of hiking Angel’s Landing in @ZionNPS is terrifying to her. Might be a solo hike for me! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6 It helps to think of the trail or road in front of you and concentrate on that, and not of the dizzying drop a few inches beside you! #parkchat

A6 I get a thrill being on top of peaks and looking down at places. Logan Pass is in the bottom left of this pic in Glacier NP shot from top of Mt. Reynolds. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6 Million Dollar highway (US 550) south of Ouray has some hairy turns. Just hang on and pay attention to the driving. But i don't think heights have deterred me in the mountains.

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6. I'm more afraid of stepping off the roof and onto the ladder of my one-story home than I am standing a foot or so from the edge of a long drop off. Can't explain it. #parkchat

A6: The aptly named Angel's Landing in Zion teased out my previous unknown fear of heights. As we climbed, my hiking buddy told the story about a park ranger who plummeted to his death. I told her that was a story for later or never. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A6. Oh yes. Suffice to say, with my fear of heights, Angel’s Landing is one NPS hike that is NOT on my bucket list. #ParkChat
