Social Media and Parks
ParkChat
Q1 #ParkChat There’s no question social media has helped to drive the increase in Park attendance. We believe it’s an overall plus for the Parks but there have been some undesirable consequences. What negatives have you noticed that are attributable to social media and the Parks?
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 Your answer is contained within your question #parkchat
A1. Instagram hikes and the photos that go with them. I've seen enough "jumping-in-the-air-at-the-Grand-Canyon-or-wherever" to last me five lifetimes, thanks. And so much more pressure on these specific and fragile places. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1: Well for starters, those “doing it for the ‘gram”, going into restricted or off Trail areas to get clicks. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 people taking unnecessary risks to get a selfie 🤳 or photos in general #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 for us, I feel like people need that epic shot or crazy angled photo and in trying to get that they ruin nature, the national park, or worse hurt themselves or others. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 people taking selfies and falling off of cliffs. I think the need to insta everything takes away from enjoying the moment and where you are #ParkChat
A1 To clarify my answer, increased attendance is good, as long as it comes with increased awareness #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 I think people are instagramming (that's a word) beautiful spots to death. Oh, let me add idiot selfies with wild animals. #ParkChat

@59NationalParks A1 Social media got me stuck in a binding National Park poll. ;)
Seriously, like most anything it has made many of us look a bit too much at our phones (or think too much about what to post) rather than enjoy the moment. #parkchat
A1 I've noticed a huge increase in visitors to the most "instagrammable" locations eager to snap that perfect photo. It clogs the roads and parking lots, they are usually quite loud and obnoxious, and really have no interest in the #nationalparks beyond Instagram. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 I wonder if all the damage done during the Government shutdown would of been as extensive without social media? #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1. It drives many visitors to do dangerous actions to capture a photo. For me personally it unfortunately makes me focus more on getting photos sometimes instead of just enjoying the moment #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks a1 - Similar to the actual NPS approach to social media. Some parks involvement is great others is non-existent. #parkchat
A1) Biggest negative is a lack of consistency from the @NatlParkService sites on social media. The quality all depends on who is working at that park, we asked at Edison NHP, who forever had great, engaged SM and their person left and the account basically died. #ParkChat
A1 Seems like we are seeing an increase in the number of bison injuries because people want their selfie next to the bison rather than a bison 100 yards in the background. #ParkChat
A1: I think that some people just want to look at pictures and videos of places instead of going out to see them for themselves. That is a problem with the internet in general. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks Trying to participate from rainy Missouri tonight. The power keeps flickering. Ugh!
A1 Downside is that people that aren’t prepared to be in the parks are out there making unsafe decisions for themselves, others and the landscape and animals. #ParkChat @TouringTastebud
A1: I think this is the biggest issue with social media. People travel because of "the gram," and not because they actually want to enjoy, learn, and experience the place they're visiting. #ParkChat https://t.co/F7N5bk8CuP
Seeing everybody's A1, I think a good topic for a future #parkchat would be "Sanity in Park Photography"
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1) Selfies or photos of people at various spots in the parks that at times can be quite dangerous to be at even without a cellphone camera. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks A1 people needing to get that "PERFECT" shot. which means they have to go into a protected area. it is hard for people to understand that dirt can actually be endangered
#ButItsDirt? #parkchat
A1. I think I noticed the phenomenon @RoadTripsCoffee talks about at Itasca state park last summer. I never remember the Mississippi headwaters being so crowded. I was like, get me outta here! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks #parkchat A1 people getting way too close to wildlife. Don't go to @YellowstoneNPS if all you have is a phone camera, people. #bisonselfie

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1: People getting themselves injured, killed, or in just plain dangerous situations all to get an Instagram shot. Things like common sense and the ability to appreciate moments seem to be increasingly rare. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1) just overall more 'popularity ' .. Now every one wants to go to the "secret" hot spring or spot, hanging lake in Colorado got hit hard, sensitive areas can't handle all the visitors #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1. Joining in late. Kids are finally asleep. Same answers as everyone else. People do dumb stuff, get hurt, damage, and we get distracted and forget to live in the moment. #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 Park visitors trying to take selfies w wild animals, especially getting way too close. While not at park, person who climbed into jaguar exhibit at Arizona zoo the other day. #parkchat
replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee @theRangerLife @NatlParkService That why our A1) was lack of consistency with the parks. It should be at least one person's 1/2 job if not full time job, especially at the major to mid-major units. Maybe this is a #FixOurParks moment. Let's get enough funding for proper outreach on social media! #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 One thing social media has done is to popularize locations on private land, resulting in the owners closing those locations. This has subsequently exacerbated high visitation related problems on public lands. #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud #parkchat A1 going to take the easy way out and say both. Positive = gets people excited to support them. Negative = too many people during my visit for my taste. But, beggars can't be choosers. We just work around it. 😉
