Q10. Do you think social media negatively or positively impacts National Parks?

A10: Social media both positively and negatively impacts the national parks. It helps bring more attention to them, but also leads to bigger crowds and nuisance issues when visiting the parks themselves. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10) Overall a net positive, easy and far reaching outreach forming strong interest in our public lands (and protecting our lands), are a huge boon from social media. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10 Social media impacts NPs in both negative and positive ways. SM can alert us to issues and concerns in parks, but also turns some people into crazies-just-for-the-photo. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10: Overall, I think Social Media has a positive impact in the way it encourages visitation and exploration of our National Parks. Those that abuse or even accidentally cause harm are not the majority #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10. Both. But it helps connect more people to our parks and it also helps push important safety information, such as weather or road closures. #parkchat

A10. It has its negatives but overall positive. Need awareness for votes! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10 I'd say it goes both ways. More crowding, more mess. At the same time we need people to keep the parks important to people and draw attention to them. It's a conundrum. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10: I think both. SM helps lesser-known parks gain exposure and makes it easier for people to keep up with special events, etc. However, it also promotes the culture of "go and get the insta-worthy photo and leave" without truly appreciating the park. #ParkChat

A10 Without social media, there would be no #parkchat, and then I would have no reason to live

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10. Positively. It's certainly made more people aware of them. Not to say that work isn't needed in minimizing the negatives of this, but overall I think it's been positive. #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10 #parkchat It's definitely both, but I think it's currently a net-negative. I'm hoping that will change as social media use matures and people aren't as easily influenced by it. We're still all pretty new to it, and learning all the time. Emerging research on it is...startling

A10 Overall I believe #socialmedia has a positive impact on our #nationalparks. It is easier than ever to inspire others to #OptOutside, raise awareness about public lands issues, and find amazing destinations to visit. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10) Its a mixed bag as we saw with the shutdown, many people who care about the parks respected the closure while others took advantage of it so they either could get in for free and/or cause damage to areas where they're not normally allowed. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10 both. Gets more people aware of the parks which is good. But then that creates so much of the “need to get that photo” culture 🤷🏼‍♀️ #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10 I honestly couldn't say, there are definitely both pros and cons to consider. I also think that different social media platforms have different impacts on parks. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10: How about both? Social helps people experience and want to see amazing park places, it’s made me awesome adventure connections, and can teach good practices. It also draws crowds and photo hype which is why how we post matters too. #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A10. I'm not sure. I know the experience of the parks should be the focus for visitors and social media should only be a tool. #parkchat
