replying to @kristarsha @kristarsha @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute One of our favorite places to visit! Hello! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute Four weeks ago part of the tree in front came down during a heavy rainstorm, I need to make it look like I'm dining something about before leaving for a week long stay at Lake Tahoe on Saturday. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute 40 - 50 plus gusts even higher mph winds all day with tons of dirty. Awful #ParkChat

replying to @ParasolViatress @ParasolViatress Hello! You made it! 😊🙌🏼 Welcome to #ParkChat

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee Maybe not for you, but there is for me. As much as I enjoy it, too much caffeine does terrible things to my stomach. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 Your answer is contained within your question #parkchat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @TouringTastebud @Wild_Tribute Terrible wind all day in Oklahoma. Bet I picked up 1000 branches around the lake house. #ParkChat

replying to @parksandpancake @parksandpancake @TouringTastebud @Wild_Tribute Welcome back! #ParkChat

A1. Instagram hikes and the photos that go with them. I've seen enough "jumping-in-the-air-at-the-Grand-Canyon-or-wherever" to last me five lifetimes, thanks. And so much more pressure on these specific and fragile places. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1: Well for starters, those “doing it for the ‘gram”, going into restricted or off Trail areas to get clicks. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 people taking unnecessary risks to get a selfie 🤳 or photos in general #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 for us, I feel like people need that epic shot or crazy angled photo and in trying to get that they ruin nature, the national park, or worse hurt themselves or others. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 people taking selfies and falling off of cliffs. I think the need to insta everything takes away from enjoying the moment and where you are #ParkChat

A1 To clarify my answer, increased attendance is good, as long as it comes with increased awareness #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 I think people are instagramming (that's a word) beautiful spots to death. Oh, let me add idiot selfies with wild animals. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks Some idiotic behavior with animals definitely and a bit of vandalism too. However, I think that these behaviors have been going on looooong before any social media was created #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks A1 Social media got me stuck in a binding National Park poll. ;)
Seriously, like most anything it has made many of us look a bit too much at our phones (or think too much about what to post) rather than enjoy the moment. #parkchat

A1 I've noticed a huge increase in visitors to the most "instagrammable" locations eager to snap that perfect photo. It clogs the roads and parking lots, they are usually quite loud and obnoxious, and really have no interest in the #nationalparks beyond Instagram. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 I wonder if all the damage done during the Government shutdown would of been as extensive without social media? #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud @tthrash @Wild_Tribute Hey wait a minute. The #ParkChat Founders Roast is not until 4/03. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1. It drives many visitors to do dangerous actions to capture a photo. For me personally it unfortunately makes me focus more on getting photos sometimes instead of just enjoying the moment #ParkChat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace And perhaps increased resources to handle the visitors and impacts? #ParkChat

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove Huh. I can't have too much caffeine, but if I drink caffeine too late in the day it will take me hours to fall asleep after getting in the bed. #ParkChat

replying to @RCGibby73 @RCGibby73 @59NationalParks Yes. That is the problem. It is sad people can’t just respect the nature and trails #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks a1 - Similar to the actual NPS approach to social media. Some parks involvement is great others is non-existent. #parkchat

replying to @parksandpancake @parksandpancake @59NationalParks So true! See it with your eyes not your phone! #ParkChat

A1) Biggest negative is a lack of consistency from the @NatlParkService sites on social media. The quality all depends on who is working at that park, we asked at Edison NHP, who forever had great, engaged SM and their person left and the account basically died. #ParkChat

A1 Seems like we are seeing an increase in the number of bison injuries because people want their selfie next to the bison rather than a bison 100 yards in the background. #ParkChat

replying to @hkergrrl @hkergrrl @59NationalParks Totally agree, but does it seem like social media has exacerbated these problems? #ParkChat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace I wanted your answer though professor. #ParkChat

A1: I think that some people just want to look at pictures and videos of places instead of going out to see them for themselves. That is a problem with the internet in general. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks Trying to participate from rainy Missouri tonight. The power keeps flickering. Ugh!
A1 Downside is that people that aren’t prepared to be in the parks are out there making unsafe decisions for themselves, others and the landscape and animals. #ParkChat @TouringTastebud

A1: I think this is the biggest issue with social media. People travel because of "the gram," and not because they actually want to enjoy, learn, and experience the place they're visiting. #ParkChat https://t.co/F7N5bk8CuP

replying to @t_jh2009 @t_jh2009 @TouringTastebud @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute "Look like" being the operative words? #ParkChat

Seeing everybody's A1, I think a good topic for a future #parkchat would be "Sanity in Park Photography"

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1) Selfies or photos of people at various spots in the parks that at times can be quite dangerous to be at even without a cellphone camera. #ParkChat

I really can't say I've seen a lot in #nationalparks that's negative attributed to social media. However, I did see a couple photographing each other in a meadow in Yosemite that was supposed to be off-limits. #ParkChat https://t.co/FSLgiE7PMC

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @59NationalParks Not entirely sure...its a hard thing to quantify, I think...kinda like social media stats, lol. It is a bit squishy. However, the deaths of those Canadians was highly publicized because of social media #parkchat

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee So true! We had the worst time at @YellowstoneNPS! #ParkChat

replying to @happytrailshike @happytrailshike @59NationalParks @TouringTastebud Sounds like today in Montana with power outage…but with tons of snow instead. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @TouringTastebud @tthrash @Wild_Tribute The flames are being stoked! #parkchat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer I think one of the people who fell into the Grand Canyon last summer was even a volunteer ranger trying to snap a selfie. I mean seriously. #ParkChat

replying to @hkergrrl @hkergrrl @59NationalParks True. Squishy is exactly the right term. #ParkChat
