Social Media and Parks
ParkChat

replying to @theRangerLife @theRangerLife I agree. Sometimes I tell myself just to@put the camera down. #ParkChat

Q3. Which social media outlets have been most helpful when searching for National Parks?
#ParkChat

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove I know, right? When we were at @GrandCanyonNPS last October, my husband and I watched the sunrise--and a couple about 100' below us who jumped about 50 times for the perfect shot, thereby missing the sunrise entirely. It was pretty pathetic. #ParkChat

replying to @hkergrrl @hkergrrl Hahaha it is nice to just sit down and watch a beautiful video and not have to talk! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2) Yes, we love to use social media to plan our parks trips, #parkchat is a great source of help, as are the many other orgs that you can query or find helpful tips.

replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @NatlParkService True, but we also know the ever-increasing backlog of work to be done in the national parks without proper funding. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2) Yes! Hubs surprised me with a trip to @JoshuaTreeNPS and I asked the #ParkChat for help planning and had the whole trip planned in 30 minutes!

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove @RoadTripsCoffee I don't know. I really don't. I wonder sometimes. #ParkChat

RT @59NationalParks: Q1 #ParkChat There’s no question social media has helped to drive the increase in Park attendance. We believe it’s an…

replying to @PackSite @PackSite That is sad. I am sure they could have taken just as great a photo on the actual path #ParkChat

A2: I haven't explicitly used social media to plan any national park trips, but I certainly follow accounts from parks leading up to my trip to learn about what to see/do there besides what I've read in guidebooks or online. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Talking is my job. My throat is so tired today because we had actual visitors...so its nice to come home and not speak a lot some nights. #Parkchat

RT @RV_Miles: Much of @YosemiteNPS will open late this season due to a deep snow pack and damage from falling trees. If you have plans, you…

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud @RoadTripsCoffee A2 I use personal connections with people to get some insider tidbits for planning NP trips, but I won’t take random social media advice without additional research to verify the validity of their suggestions. Too many people spouting bad facts. #ParkChat

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee It’s such a tricky relationship. “Get off my Lawn”...”Oh that lawn looks nice” #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2 Totally! Our recent trips to California were all about reading reviews and seeing sights online first. #ParkChat

I've used Instagram to look at recent photos of a place to check the weather and road conditions. #ParkChat https://t.co/1Ol32lTWR0

A3 I think that Instagram has to take the cake! When we are checking for updates I have found Twitter to be a great resource though! Gives you instant feedback! #ParkChat

replying to @hkergrrl @hkergrrl @RoadTripsCoffee @NatlParkService Good to know! #ParkChat

replying to @louisbink @louisbink I think that depends on lots of factors. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer It's basically the only way I plan trips these days! #ParkChat

RT @RoadTripsCoffee: Me! I'm ready for fun and excitement! And coffee! So much coffee! #ParkChat https://t.co/BFWKIyh9Ll

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud #parkchat A2 definitely! This chat crowd has the BEST info. And @instagram inspired us, even with the same 1000 photos of Horseshoe Bend. Lol

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2) No, I too darn old to let social media have that much power in my life though I will use to show travel photos to family and friends. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2. Absolutely. Guilty as charged. It kind of encourages me when people (family especially) want to live vicariously through my travel posts. #parkchat

replying to @kristarsha @kristarsha @59NationalParks That's literally what I was thinking! There have always been dumb people (When @YellowstoneNPS was first opened, people fed the bears from their hands.) But the whole #selfie craze is new. #ParkChat

replying to @Polymathically @Polymathically @59NationalParks It is shocking how rare that is to find now a days haha #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @RoadTripsCoffee And that's the thing. IMO, we should travel for more than just the photos. Yes, take a ton of photos to share what you saw/did. However, as you noted with people jumping during the sunrise, you miss out sometimes when too focused on taking pics. #ParkChat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Stars252525 Its true - reverance and respect seriously lacking. Conversly - I've seen volunteers put a stop to this behavior at the Alamo. Bravo! #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2: Not really, I usually just Google destinations and go from there. I'll follow the parks' social media pages for info, safety, conditions, etc. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A3: Instagram and YouTube by far with help from Twitter. I love watching long form hiking trip videos #ParkChat

RT @TouringTastebud: Q3. Which social media outlets have been most helpful when searching for National Parks?
#ParkChat https://t.co/Jn6CX2…

RT @tabbsbetrippin: @TouringTastebud A2. I follow the twitter accounts of National Parks that we're visiting. That's how we found out which…

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee @ParksandPoints @NatlParkService I,be been at one park who had one person in charge, although he did more than just social media for his job #ParkChat

replying to @parksandpancake @parksandpancake If you DM us I can get back after the chat! 😊 #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1. Joining in late. Kids are finally asleep. Same answers as everyone else. People do dumb stuff, get hurt, damage, and we get distracted and forget to live in the moment. #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud #ParkChat A3 Trip advisor and Facebook are my go to spots. Hoping that others will look to YouTube videos for Park Travel Reviews though. 😉

replying to @parksandpancake @parksandpancake @TouringTastebud #ParkChat @badlandsnps will be a hit. Mud, rocks, dirt, fossils. It's all awesome! 😁

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove @RoadTripsCoffee Oh, I agree, and that's why I travel too. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @RCGibby73 @Stars252525 @kristarsha @BigBendNPS Very exciting! That would be an amazing trip I am sure! #ParkChat

A3: I don't travel to enough national parks to offer advice on best social media accounts for them. Generally the parks themselves can be hit or miss with how active they are on various platforms. #ParkChat

replying to @theRangerLife @theRangerLife @RoadTripsCoffee @ParksandPoints @NatlParkService Don't we all? lol #Parkchat #OtherDutiesAsAssigned

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee @NatlParkService A valid point, but PR is huge, especially for what is an org that has recreation and travel (word used is enjoyment) as a major part of its mission statement. #ParkChat

RT @happytrailshike: @TouringTastebud A2 Totally! Our recent trips to California were all about reading reviews and seeing sights online f…

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud We better get a #ParkChat answer for Q3. 😉

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove @WildWithinHer It is ENTIRELY about the balance. I've noticed so, so many people come to a screeching halt on the Blue Ridge Parkway, hop out of the car to snap a few selfies, and then immediately leave. Those are the people I'm talking about. #ParkChat

replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @NatlParkService I have *knock on wood* had best results with Twitter when checking National Park sites! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A3) I like @twitter because it is easier to chat and discuss, please search is easier. Instagram is good for inspiration, but it's too much about that perfect moment, which is not how most of us experience parks! #ParkChat

replying to @e_terren @e_terren That is amazing! #ParkChat is such a great spot for that!
