replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @TouringTastebud @JoshuaTreeNPS Yes they are! I was in a walking boot too, so everyone was great with suggesting things I could "actually" do and see. Ended up doing a few things that we wouldn't have normally done. #ParkChat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove @GrandCanyonNPS Bahahah. Love grizzly bear threats. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Upon further consideration, I don't want to say that I will never use social media to plan future trips. As others in the chat pointed out, I like to use tips from people I feel I can trust, not just anybody. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @RoadTripsCoffee But with more and more stories about people dying while trying to capture the perfect shot, it shows that they don't have balance. It shows that *some* people are more consumed with the picture than safety or enjoying the moment. #ParkChat

replying to @InnerCompass @InnerCompass @TouringTastebud @JoshuaTreeNPS Way cool! #ParkChat

replying to @RCGibby73 @RCGibby73 I am the same way! YouTube is such a helpful tool to use! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Oh, and I guess it's not really a "social network", but a huge help in trip planning for our trip was https://t.co/aDGnO6z2LG or https://t.co/GfRw7sGR7I. We learned about those sites later on in our trip, and they were a huge help when we were going to a new area. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud First and foremost I use social media to share what we are doing in the Parks. And to make fun of @RoadTripsCoffee #ParkChat

Following a national park's social media accounts is really helpful as you head up to a trip there. #ParkChat #nationalparks https://t.co/jULGLd5JXB

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove They aren't, though. A bald eagle nest has been abandoned on the BRP because people kept jumping the fence for the sake of a photo. A girl died in the Grand Canyon last summer for the sake of a photo. And this is happening more often. #ParkChat

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove Right. I'm not disagreeing. I think they're missing out too. At the same time, I can only say that my way of travel works for me. Others obviously travel in a way that works for them (though heaven knows why). The upside is they're in a rush and don't stay long, lol. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A4. Most of the time I'm researching parks and surrounding communities on standard websites. I get into social media (YouTube, Instagram) from links on the websites. #parkchat

replying to @t_jh2009 @t_jh2009 Facebook seems to be a great answer that we never have checked out for that! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A4) Status reports on the various National Park Service Areas usually, like information about the road closures is nice to see. #ParkChat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove @GrandCanyonNPS Yes! Got so ticked in Muir Woods NM last week with a selfie crew! #ParkChat

Q5. National Parks have been here for years and years, but social media is relatively new. Which has had more of an impact on your life?
#ParkChat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService Totally understand, though we should get adequate funding for outreach for our parks, but perhaps again, a #FixOurParks moment. #ParkChat

replying to @happytrailshike @happytrailshike Yes! YouTube is going to be HUGE for reviews and travels, love your content! #ParkChat

A4: I use social media for sharing photos of my visits to the national parks. I'm not a seasons park traveler, so I don't have too many tips to offer. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud #parkchat A4 we like to see if other people from #parkchat or other chats will be in the same area at the same time. Fun to meet those we follow! @beckyjlomax

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Not having used social media to plan trips yet, I couldn't say. I am eager to read the other replies and see what more experienced social media users think! #ParkChat

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove @WildWithinHer @RoadTripsCoffee I would say they don't have balance in either a physical or a spiritual sense #parkchat

replying to @theRangerLife @theRangerLife @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove But the point I am making is that the number of people who only enjoy the parks for the sake of a photo are increasing traffic, liter, damaging the parks, trespassing, and harming themselves. There is a connection. #ParkChat

RT @TouringTastebud: Q4. What do you use social media for regarding National Parks? Tips, Photos, Share Info?
#ParkChat https://t.co/xYZJZA…

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1 One thing social media has done is to popularize locations on private land, resulting in the owners closing those locations. This has subsequently exacerbated high visitation related problems on public lands. #parkchat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer I know we're 100% on the same page about people missing out. #ParkChat

replying to @InnerCompass @InnerCompass @JoshuaTreeNPS How amazing is that?!? So cool! Joshua tree is amazing! #ParkChat

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee @StevenOnTheMove It's hard to separate the threads, though. Is it really more frequent, or just that we hear about it more bc of social media? Is it a function of more people at the parks, and therefore proportionally more scofflaws? The plural of anecdote is not data. #ParkChat

replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @NatlParkService I know I keep coming back to that theme, but it is really true. And the current budget proposal to cut DOI funds by 12% will do nothing for #publiclands social media presence. #ParkChat

A5 NATIONAL PARKS 100%! Social media has been a huge influence in my life but being in the National Parks this year truly made me realize priorities of life and enjoying the views not the “tweets”! #ParkChat

replying to @naturetechfam @naturetechfam @TouringTastebud OMG….there we are from last summer! Way cool. #ParkChat

replying to @NakMakFeegle @59NationalParks More people are going outside, and there are fewer places for them to go. #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5 If It weren’t for the parks, I wouldn’t have a social media life. Ha! (It’s true!). #ParkChat

replying to @happytrailshike @happytrailshike @beckyjlomax @WildWithinHer @GrandCanyonNPS I wish more places, not just national parks, would ban selfie sticks. Nothing wrong with wanting a picture of yourself at XYZ spot, but selfie sticks create bad visitors. #ParkChat
