Social Media and Parks
ParkChat

A4 Well I'm a #travelblogger. I use social media to share stories of my #travel adventures and hopefully inspire others to have their own. Oh and road trips and coffee, of course. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud @theRangerLife Yep, I might end up on social media in reverse--look at a map of an area, see what NPS sites are nearby, and then checking with friends here and IG in various areas who may be nearby, etc. #parkchat

RT @59NationalParks: @kristarsha Just not worth the risk. #ParkChat https://t.co/D3CkK9euB2

replying to @tabbsbetrippin @tabbsbetrippin @TouringTastebud I like to use blogs, too. Somehow they seem more authoritative. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Each area uses social media a different way it seems. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Q5) Our parks have had a greater impact on me, but I have found and met some great friends from social media (this chat to be specific)! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5) definitely parks, hands down !! #naturelovers #ParkChat family time like none other

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @RoadTripsCoffee @StevenOnTheMove This is such a good point. Furthermore, there are many deaths in National Parks then no one ever hears about. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A4 I use to share experiences for the most part. I am learning how to gather information as well. There is so much that it can be a bit overwhelming. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud @naturetechfam Yes! And @naturetechfam was super helpful on planning my trip to Badlands, Custer SP, and Black Hills. #ParkChat

RT @59NationalParks: Q1 #ParkChat There’s no question social media has helped to drive the increase in Park attendance. We believe it’s an…

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove Fair point. Working in parks you quickly learn habits. Those who plan to enjoy the park come in early, those looking for photos all roll in around noon and complain about traffic from everyone else who had the same idea #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @ParasolViatress @bewildandbefree @TouringTastebud Oh me too! I LOVE paper maps! We carry them every time we are on the trails! #ParkChat

@TouringTastebud A5: I think Social Media has had a profound impact on my love for Our National Parks. I’ve had my fire stoked by #ParkChat
Pre 2015 I was a bonafied couch potato

A5: Clearly the parks themselves have had a bigger impact on my life compared to social media. As I ironically participate in an event using social media. #ParkChat #irony

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A4 I've shared photos I've taken at national and state parks. I usually don't carry a camera other than phone. #parkchat

replying to @publiclandlvr @publiclandlvr @NatlParkService Thankfully, Congress sets the budgets. Based on their performance so far, I doubt we see a 12% cut. If anything, we may see an increase. #FingersCrossed #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud If TripAdvisor counts as social media, I use it the most. I have used it for years, since I have written reviews on my father's account for a long time. I like the mixture of reviews and responses from the actual place. #ParkChat

RT @tabbsbetrippin: @TouringTastebud A2. I follow the twitter accounts of National Parks that we're visiting. That's how we found out which…

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee @theRangerLife @StevenOnTheMove Sure, but the parks are for everyone--as long as they follow the rules. I recognize that some people don't, and that affects all of us. But I can't say that going for a photo isn't a valid reason to visit the parks, even if it is the only reason for some. #ParkChat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove Right? And I feel like it isn’t as much fun. You don’t really remember anything! #ParkChat

RT @theRangerLife: @59NationalParks A1. It drives many visitors to do dangerous actions to capture a photo. For me personally it unfortunat…

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5 I got engaged on our @OlympicNP trip. Bigger impact than social media. My NP memories will always outweigh social media #parkchat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @WildWithinHer @RoadTripsCoffee Absolutely agree. But spiritual balance is also very personal. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud #parkChat for finding tips and sharing them. Social media is a great way to get info, and showcase your latest trips https://t.co/Z1s7VboxVH

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud Unplugging when in the parks is the BEST! #ParkChat

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove For sure. We're the ones moving farther and farther away as the crowds on the canyon rim get bigger. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5 I was exploring parks and other public lands long before social media even existed! They are what inspired me to start writing, taking photos, and capturing video, and my work with those mediums is why I started using social media. #parkchat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5. Tough question. I grew up going on NPS road trips. But I'm also of the #socialmedia generation. Chatrooms. AIM. Myspace. Facebook. Twitter. Blogs. The internet is what allowed my husband to work remotely so that we could take our #NationalParksRoadTrip. So. both? #parkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove I witness it. My eyes are the data. I've been traveling national parks for 10 years now. It's been the last 2-3 years that I've seen more people tweeting or instagramming selfies, trespassing, and damaging the parks solely for the sake of a selfie. #ParkChat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @unconpeace @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove @GrandCanyonNPS The whole jumping thing :( #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @happytrailshike @TouringTastebud @TripAdvisor Yes! I use @TripAdvisor to source national park and outdoor recreation tours. The reviews are more descriptive and honest than a lot of other review sites. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5) After being a National Park Service Volunteer for nearly 25 years, I'm not going to say that social media has more influence in my life more than the parks. 😁 #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5 Throughout our 37 years of marriage the Parks have been so important to Shelly and I. So I’ll go with Parks. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @RoadTripsCoffee It is most likely a combination of everything. #ParkChat

replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove @happytrailshike @beckyjlomax @WildWithinHer @GrandCanyonNPS That isn’t a terrible idea. Have never considered that but those things are a danger to those around! #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A5 Oh, definitely the parks. However, I've made some good friends here in #ParkChat.

replying to @theRangerLife @theRangerLife @WildWithinHer @StevenOnTheMove That's about the most perfect summation ever. #ParkChat

replying to @TouringTastebud @TouringTastebud A2 #parkchat Not really. Maps and the national park websites are the best resources. Most of the social media I notice around parks focuses on the already popular places that everyone already knows about.

A5) A bigger impact from us is social media, we almost certainly wouldn't have met nearly any of you back in 1990. And we love our #tweetups and #parkchat. What a great community and full of awesome advise and motivation!

A5 The national parks of Uzbekistan have had a bigger impact on my life than social media, and I've never even been there #parkchat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @TouringTastebud @naturetechfam Going there in May with my family. Need all the tips! #parkchat

replying to @RoadTripsCoffee @RoadTripsCoffee Love your blog! You do an amazing job of showing a true and honest perception of an area #ParkChat

replying to @naturetechfam @naturetechfam @TouringTastebud @beckyjlomax So much fun indeed and we’ve always met great folks. #ParkChat
