Q2. National parks are often located far from human-caused light sources. What’s the darkest place you’ve ever been? #ParkChat

A2. Other than a cave, probably @DeathValleyNPS, an International Dark Sky Park, and Craters of the Moon National Monument. Central Oregon. And of course, my beloved @NCascadesNPS. #ParkChat

Honestly though it’s amazing how much light there is in the middle of a dark sky preserve

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2: two of my favorites so far: Grand Canyon & Acadia. Thanks to the folks on the island, they have a “lights curfew” - I’d love to see more of those around! #parkchat

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2 When I was in nearby Capital Reef NP, I seem to recall them explaining that it was the darkest (or among the darkest) places in the country. #parkchat

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2) This isn't a National Park of course, but the family cabin is one of the farthest points from any main highway in Michigan, and I have experienced some beautifully pitch black, brilliant starry nights there. #ParkChat

A2 Being an East Coaster means it's really difficult to find dark skies, even in the national parks. The darkest place I've ever been was the old Sheldon Church ruins in @Visit_Beaufort

Without my strobes it was pitch black. #ParkChat

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2) Within the National Park Service it would be in the low lands of Joshua Tree National Park. Outside of the NPS it was along the Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur where there wasn't any light sources for miles. #ParkChat

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2. The Adirondack Scout Reservation in New York's Adirondack State Park. Definitely the darkest skies I've ever experienced - and a great place to spend three summers teaching Astronomy Merit Badge! #ParkChat

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2. I'm from a mining community, and we clearly pride ourselves on this 😁 there is a place that gives access to the public to safely go down a mine shaft. That's a dark space! Otherwise, the are a few very dark parks nearby that offer greater stargazing.#ParkChat

replying to @ArchesNPS @ArchesNPS A2. Darkest place I've been was on a cave tour--Wind Cave, I think--when the guide turned off the lights to show us complete darkness. 30 seconds was about all I could take. #parkchat
