Q1 #ParkChat Unfortunately life has a way of limiting how long we can stay at a Park so we have to make the most of it. When planning a Park visit how do you decide which trails to hike and which to skip? Name one that you skipped but are planning to go back and try @Wild_Tribute

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 I check out the park websites and other sources and decide which ones this older asthmatic can handle. #truth #ParkChat

A1. The Bechler Trail in Yellowstone. Also seem to be doing weekend sections of the Teton Crest. Nothing like the wanderlust to go back after getting a taste! #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1: I pick the ones that are too remote, steep, scary and/or difficult to be crowded. I might go back to Isle Royale to do the Greenstone one day #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1: I skipped on doing Bright Angel last year but definitely will do down to the Canyon floor next time. #ParkChat

A1 The Castle Trail @BadlandsNPS - maybe not the most exciting trail in the NP system, but I've been to that park twice before & there aren't that many trails there, so I really have no excuse #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1) #ParkChat I basically go by the weather and how much time I have also depends on if I have camera gear and want to get sunset or sunrise shots. I definitely want to explore the back country in @Volcanoes_NPS

replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 #ParkChat So many trails. So many factors go into deciding which trails to hike!
As for one that I skipped… I really wanted to do the trail from Glacier Point to the Valley @YosemiteNPS.

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1: I have to consider what my kids can handle, mileage & difficulty. They are getting much better, thankfully carrying more gear, too. Half Dome is definitely on the list! #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1: At Mt Ranier, I always wanted to do all the Burroughs Mt. hikes, but just not enough time time to get beyond Burroughs 1. I try to pick hikes with great views! #ParkChat

A1) Tough one, we generally are traveling at a moderate clip, so we try to get a good sampling of hikes in each #park we visit. That said we are bummed that weather and time cut short our hike to Grinnell Glacier in @GlacierNPS and hope to make it back (before it melts) #ParkChat

A1 Elevation change. It's easier and faster to walk a longer trail with a shorter elevation change than vice versa.
But one trail I really wish I had hiked was to Hawksbill Bill at @ShenandoahNPS, the highest point in the park. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1) I decide on which trails to take based on the degree of difficulty, average trail time, the things to see along the way & type of trail, I prefer loop trails since I'm not fond of backtracking. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1) I’ve skipped so many since my ankle injury, but hope I can someday got back and do some. I’m really bummed that I likely won’t be able do Old Rag in @ShenandoahNPS, but I’m not totally giving up hope yet. 😂 #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 we do a lot of reading before we leave. Cross referencing to figure out must see hikes and hidden gems. Typically we consult a ranger for the last minute decision #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 We have to be mindful of what hiking we'll be able to do with the little one in tow now. Skipped the Beehive Trail at @AcadiaNPS since our junior ranger wasn't even 1 when we went - but I expect to hit it up on a return visit one of these days. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1: Consult with rangers at the visitor center. Little kids with little legs limits us. Sometimes we get out on our own too. I want to hike to Mount Le Conte @GreatSmokyNPS with my kids when they are older. #ParkChat

A1. At least one trail, at least a few miles. At @BryceCanyonNPS last fall, I wanted to do Queen's Garden-maybe next time. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute #parkchat A1 any hike @GuadalupeMtnsNP! When we arrived on our #9parks12days trip, it was 104 degrees, so hiking w kiddos was out of the question. We WILL go back again to hike it!

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 Bright Angel Trail @GrandCanyonNPS Had very limited time when I visited and really wanted to get below the rim so I hiked 20 minutes down the trail then turned around and headed back up having to pull over for a mule train once 😬 #ParkChat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax A1 We need a forest regardless of elevation. We enjoy the sounds (birdsong) and the smells. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1. If I can string together trails or create a loop, that's great.
The most recent trail that I skipped would've actually made a loop. It wasn't a NP trail. Rather the scenic trail at Sawteeth Mtn. Kiddo & I just did the Weld Trail. We wanna hit Scenic Tr in the future #parkchat
replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 - Was bummed to not get permits for the Half Dome summit cables - but after a full day from Panorama point to the Valley floor - not sure I would have had the juice left for that climb. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1 #ParkChat I would ask a Ranger for the best ones to do with my time.

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1: Being realistic about my endurance vs how much time is scheduled. Even that can be spoiled unexpectedly. One of my biggest regrets is holding off @ArchesNPS until the late afternoon. I didn't know they were closing off the park early, so I had to rush through it. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute A1. It depends on the trip and a lot of factors, such as how much hiking I did already, how much more do I plan to do, etc. Then, thinking about avoiding crowds. #parkchat
