Q11. Bushwhacking is the art of navigating when a trail is not present. Highly looked down upon in sensitive vegetation areas, but at times necessary depending the scenario and Park. Any noteworthy bushwhacks you’ve experienced in the field? Tell us about it. #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A11 We tend just to stick to trails. I have no sense of direction and prefer not to need SAR. 😉 #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A11 #parkchat There were some pretty overgrown areas of the PCT in Glacier Wilderness this past summer. I’ve also bushwacked off trail to find alpine lakes to enjoy.

A11 Right behind my house growing up - we often hiked to the top of the mountain, and we had to walk across an area that had been cut down to put a power line through, the secondary growth was really nasty #parkchat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A11.) #Parkchat Yes, at @Volcanoes_NPS is got dark and I was with a group that got turned around and we could luckily hear a road but scary since there are cracks that drop straight down into the Earth that could have swollowed us!

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A11: someone always had a machete when we would be out in the Forest in Madagascar. #ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute A11) I don't recommend buckwacking just because of the reasons stated but also because I tried to do it years ago at @PointReyesNPS & got stuck up past my knees in the muck. Thus I lost time not staying on the trail. #ParkChat
